In September 2017, when Fortnite’s battle royale mode launched, no one could have imagined it would become the pop culture phenomenon it is today. Epic Games’ title established itself as one of the most successful “games as a service” of all time, not only because of its gameplay but also because of its countless collaborations. Nine years after its debut, the Fortnitemares 2026 update has addedFive Nights at Freddy’s outfits, making one of the fans’ wildest predictions from years ago a reality: bringing together characters as diverse as Goku, Freddy Fazbear, Darth Vader, and Sonic in the same game.
Epic Games is unrivaled when it comes to licensing content, and the latest Fortnite update proves it once again
On Thursday, October 1, 2026, Fortnite received its 42.30 update, which includes all the content from Fortnitemares 2026. As is customary with Epic’s popular title, every Halloween event is a major occasion that adds new horror icons to its vast catalog of collaborations. This year, figures such as Freddy Krueger, Slender Man, and several characters from Five Nights at Freddy’s have joined the game as new outfits that will delight both their respective fans and horror enthusiasts in general.
That said, the most striking aspect of this recent update is that it includes a Freddy Fazbear outfit from FNAF, which was not only one of the collaborations most eagerly requested by fans of the game, but also one of the main stars of an iconic meme that imagined what Fortnite might look like in the future. The original image was posted in late 2021 on X and showed Goku, Freddy Fazbear, Darth Vader, and Sonic together—a joke that foreshadowed the madness Fortnite would reach in the years to come.
Five years later, that joke became a reality: while Gokuand Darth Vaderjoined the game in 2022, in 2026 the other two characters have done the same in the same season. Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 is a celebration of video game legends: Sonic and his friends are part of the storyline this season, while Freddy and company have arrived on the island to turn it upside down for Halloween 2026. The official Fortnite account itself has made a direct reference to the meme, jokingly commenting that “dreams really do come true.”

And the truth is that, at this point, no one can argue that Fortnite is the most successful example of a metaverse thanks to its vast amount of licensed content: real-life figures like Harry Kane and Leo Messi coexist with icons like Iron Man and even more obscure characters like Chapulín Colorado himself. Now, joining them are two different Freddys (Krueger and Fazbear) and Slender Man, who will also meet up with other characters as radically different from one another as Goku, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Darth Vader. At this point, Epic Games’ biggest challenge isn’t securing new licenses, but rather obtaining those that can truly surprise its players.
