Former Bachelor host Chris Harrison is pulling back the curtain on his exit from the franchise.
“If I learned anything over the years about relationships and breakups — and I’ve seen a lot of breakups — is that things don’t end how you always want them to,” Harrison, 55, said on the Wednesday, November 4, episode of the “Unplanned” podcast. “There’s very few endings like John Elway got, where you win a Super Bowl and you ride off into the sunset into the hall of fame. It usually doesn’t end like the movies.”
He continued, “Breakups are messy at times. Divorce is messy at times. And this was a divorce. It got a little contentious, a little messy, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t right. You know what I mean? For me, I still look at it, oddly, as a blessing, because it’s gotten me to where I am today and it allowed me to grow as a man, as a husband, as a dad, as a friend to my friends, to reconnect.”
Harrison shared that he then became “reinvigorated” to create his new faith-based reality dating show, The Vow, which follows 10 women vying for the affections of Jace Cates. (Warner Bros, who owns the Bachelor franchise, has sent a cease-and-desist letter claiming The Vow’s teaser used the studio’s IP without authorization. Harrison has since pushed back on this idea.)
“Everything led to this,” he said. “God gives you these blessings sometimes and it’s not always just wrapped up in this cute little box under the tree. That’s not exactly how God works.”
Harrison departed from his longtime role hosting the franchise in 2021 after facing backlash for his controversial comments supporting former contestant Rachael Kirkconnell, who made headlines for her past racially insensitive actions. He was ultimately replaced with former Bachelor and NFL player Jesse Palmer.
“The only thing that I thought is when I stepped away from the show — and it was a mutual parting of the ways, we all decided, you know what, it’s time — and for me, it was a tough call,” he said on Wednesday. “I was in the middle of renegotiating a contract but I felt it was just time to go. And it’s a hard choice.”
He continued, “Everything really does come back to love and relationships and being intentional in those relationships. And it wasn’t the right place for me anymore.”
From Harrison’s perspective, sometimes the “difficult thing is to walk away” from a relationship or a job.

Deal of the Day
“Sometimes the tough thing is to make that choice to walk away because it’s better for you,” he said. “And when I walked away, there was a moment where I thought, ‘Maybe I won’t do this again. Whether I work in this business again, maybe I won’t do a relationship show again.’”
He continued, “When I was inspired again and felt this fire to create The Vowand to do this new show, it was the most genuine excitement I felt in a long time. … I think the timing is right for all of this to happen. And I’m a big believer in timing and Karma and maybe it’s a God thing, whatever you believe in. I believe The Vow is here at the right place at the right time and I just can’t wait for people to see it.”
The Vow premieres on Fox Nation Wednesday, November 11.
