Ohio (WXIX) — A 16-year-old high school student facing a rare and aggressive cancer battle could soon see himself transformed into an official comic book hero
Meshaun Tubbs, an avid fan of Marvel and comic books, was first diagnosed at age 12 with a rare muscle cancer. Following 42 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, he reached remission.
In February, the cancer returned to his lungs. Oncologists discovered three rare genetic mutations in his tumors, presenting a medical diagnosis his doctor described as literally “one in eight billion.” As a result, Tubbs will likely require chemotherapy treatments for the rest of his life.
Despite the lifelong diagnosis, Tubbs focused his efforts on helping other young patients. Through his nonprofit organization, MightyMeshaun, he designs and distributes free port-accessible shirts and care packages to pediatric cancer patients and their families.
“When I went through it, it sucked,” Tubbs said. “And I wanted to make it feel a little bit better for others.”
That mission has now placed him in contention to become the first-ever Stan Lee Super Kid. The nationwide contest awards its winner an appearance in an official Stan Lee comic book, a trip to Los Angeles Comic Con, and a $25,000 grand prize. Tubbs has already pledged to donate the entire cash prize directly back to pediatric cancer support initiatives.
Local first responders have rallied behind him in his push to win. Forest Park Fire Chief Jermaine Hill said voting for Tubbs became an immediate priority for the department after learning about his story and generosity.
“That’s the heart of a hero. Selfless,” Hill said. “He wants to give it to cancer awareness and for others to benefit… all he wants to do is go to Comic Con. I love it.”
Hill added that supporting Tubbs reflects the department’s commitment to its residents: “He’s a Forest Park product, first and foremost. And two, that’s just the relationship we have with our community — we step up for everybody.”
Community members can cast a free daily vote online.
Tubbs is currently in first place in the contest. Voting ends Nov. 19.
