Dax Shepard is looking back at his brief romance with Kate Hudson.
The Idiocracy actor, 51, reflected on his three-month-long relationship with Hudson, 47, back in 2007 on a recent episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, explaining that they first met through her brother Oliver Hudson when she was still married to Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson.
“I f—ing adore Oliver. I was at his house one night playing poker, and she came and played, and she was still with Chris,” Dax explained. “I gave her 111% of any charm I have, right?”

His cohost, Monica Padman, then stepped in to inform the episode’s guests Sara and Erin Fosterthat Dax has always been “obsessed” with Kate.
“I just thought she was so fucking beautiful,” he said. “And I loved Almost Famous, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe she’s here.’ And I just gave her… everything I had in the reserve tank she got.”
The podcaster noted that he didn’t think anything would come from their meeting. “I remember leaving going like, ‘Well, that’s as good of a job as one can do. I mean, she’s married, who cares?'” Dax reflected. “But that was a great first showing.”
He shared that he continued to crush on Kate and, after she and Robinson separated in 2007, reconnected with the actress at a dinner party in Malibu.
“I went, and she was there, and she’s now single,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Let’s see if we can f—ing muster up this magic and get it going again.’ And then I got it going again. And then from that night on, we were just together every single day.”

Sara, who was friends with both Kate and Dax, added that she had a good feeling about their relationship. “You guys got serious fast,” she said. “And you guys were like, always in beanies.”
Shepard interjected, “Making out, f—ing all day long.”
In fact, Sara admitted that at one point she felt “territorial” over Dax because they’d been friends first. “I remember being like, ‘Kate, this is crazy. It’s like my best friend!'” she said as Dax burst into laughter. “And I remember like you and her were kind of like, ‘What?’ She was like, ‘You don’t know him that well.'”
To which he replied, “Oh my goodness, I didn’t even know any of this happened.”
Dax went on to share that dating Kate — whose mom is Goldie Hawn and stepdad is Kurt Russell — was a “fish out of water” moment for him as a young actor. “I walk into that situation… as someone from Detroit, it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, her dad’s famous, her parents were famous,’ they went to school,” he said. “Like, there’s a whole network. In my mind, it’s like, oh, all these people are [connected].”
But Erin pointed out that Kate’s pals didn’t see Dax as an outsider. “I think all of us, we have a perception of ourselves that’s always so different than someone else,” she said. “And I was not nearly as close to Kate at that time as Sara was, but I feel like the general feeling around her dating you was like, ‘Oh, she’s dating someone who’s cool and normal and a guy’s guy.'”
She also noted that they respected that he wasn’t “treating her with kid gloves the same way that maybe someone else would,” adding, “There wasn’t like a feeling of, ‘Wow, she picked up trailer trash along the way.’ It wasn’t like, ‘who’s this guy?'”
After their split, Dax would go on to marryKristen Bell, with whom he shares two daughters. Kate, meanwhile, has been engaged to musician Danny Fujikawa since 2021.
