    What to know

    • Fan Expo Canada continues Saturday and Sunday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
    • Watch out for fan-favourite cosplays like Spiderman, Darth Vader, and characters from The Amazing Digital Circus and Five Nights at Freddy’s.
    • Joining Fan Expo Canada in celebrating 30 years is the beloved media franchise Pokémon, which released its first video games in 1996. Catch fans dressed as Pikachu or Ash Ketchum on the convention grounds.

Headed to Fan Expo Canada in Downtown Toronto this weekend? You might be able to catch Spiderman, Darth Vader, or Ash Ketchum roaming the convention grounds.

One of the city’s biggest events for anime, video game, comic book, sci-fi and pop culture lovers continues this Saturday and Sunday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Get ready to show up in costume, meet your favourite movie and TV stars, and support local vendors.

Here are five popular cosplays to keep an eye out for and grab a picture with this weekend.

    Spiderman

Since first appearing in Marvel comics in 1962, Spiderman’s status in pop culture has transformed from “your friendly neighbourhood superhero” to one of the most cosplayed characters in history.

Due to Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland’s excellent performances as the superhero in their respective blockbuster movies throughout the last 25 years, Spiderman is more popular than ever. This summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already grossed over $2.2 billion.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the various Spiderman cosplays slinging webs at Fan Expo this weekend.

    The Amazing Digital Circus

Originally premiering on YouTube, The Amazing Digital Circus is an animated dark comedy web series that has exceeded all expectations. The show’s pilot went viral, becoming one of the most-viewed animation pilots, with 7.4 million views and counting. After only three episodes, the series was bought by Netflix. The final two episodes premiered in theatres this June as The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act.

Fans over the show love its main characters Pomni, Caine, Jax, Ragatha, Gangle, and Kinger due to their relatability and strong personalities. Catch one (or all) of these characters in the real world at Fan Expo this weekend.

    Pokémon

Like Fan Expo, the Pokémon media franchise is also celebrating its 30-year anniversary this weekend. The beloved Japanese media empire has captivated children and adults alike since its original 1996 video games Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green. In the years since, Pokémon has spawned more video games, an animated TV show, trading cards, and toys.

Watch out for Pikachu, Ash Ketchum, Misty, Bulbasaur, and some of the franchise’s most-famous characters walking around Fan Expo this weekend — but don’t get hit by a Poké Ball.

    Star Wars

Created by George Lucas, Star Wars is one of the most successful — and highest-grossing — media franchises of the past century, spawning over a dozen movies, several video games, comic books, tabletop roleplaying games, and spinoff TV series.

As Mark Hamill will be attending Fan Expo for photo opps, autograph signings and talks, there’s bound to be a plethora of Star Wars cosplayers dressed as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and more characters this weekend.

    Five Nights at Freddy’s

Forget Slenderman and The Backrooms, Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNaF) still reigns in the horror space. Since the original FNaF point-and-click survival horror game released in 2014 about a security guard working the night shift at a local pizzeria, FNaFhas evolved into 11 main video games, eight spinoff games, three novels, and two film adaptations. While the franchise has been hit-or-miss among critics, fans have loved the FNaF universe since the beginning.

Look out for creative and possibly terrifying cosplays of Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie The Bunny, Chica the Chicken and other characters protecting the Fan Expo convention grounds this weekend.
