Fable is finally set to launch on February 23, 2027 following several delays. Ahead of its arrival next year though, Playground Games just dropped the game’s first free demo at Xbox FanFest.
Xbox FanFest is an in-person celebration of all things Xbox to mark the company’s 25th anniversary.
It’s in the midst of a world tour with stops left in Sydney, Toronto, and Seattle. It was in recent days at the London version of the event, though, that lucky attendees got to go hands-on with Fable.
The surprise demo was not announced ahead of time and reportedly focused on combat, running at 60fps on an Xbox Series X/S in Performance Mode.
Thankfully, it looks as if everyone came away very impressed, with Xbox fans loving what they’ve seen of Fable so far.
“I just played Fable at Xbox FanFest,” began Twitter/X user PeterP_1985. “Flawless 60fps, gorgeous. Combat is really fun. The switching between magic, ranged, and melee is seamless and intuitive. Voice acting is top notch.”
“Played Fable. It’s phenomenal. Thought I was playing PC version but was the Series X version. Locked 60. It was amazing,” chaosprimeZ added.
Playground Games shared its own thoughts on the event: “We’ve spent years building the world of Albion. During Xbox FanFest, we finally got to watch hundreds of players take their first steps into it themselves. The reactions, the smiles, the excitement… We’ve loved every second of sharing Fable with fans in London!”
Of course, the response to the demo has to be viewed within a certain context. It’s an Xbox first-party game being previewed at an Xbox fan event, so there could be a small element of bias.
Plus, those who did go hands-on did so with a very small slice of the game so there’s still a lot of question marks surrounding the wider picture.
That being said, Fable looks fantastic and this is about as good of a sign as we can get that it’ll stick the landing come launch day.
Fable’s looking great, but it is up against some stiff competition in February
Fable is actually launching in what is already shaping up to be a very, very busy month.
Metro 2039 is the month’s first major arrival, landing on February 4. That’ll be followed by Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantison February 12, and God of War: Laufey on February 16.
Gamers then have Persona 4 Revivalon February 18 before Fable lands on February 23. It does feel a bit as if every major title that wanted to avoid GTA VIsimply picked February instead.
In a Q&A at this year’s Gamescom, Playground Games shared that it’ll only take around 20 hours to completeFable’s main story.
If you go after side quests or for full completion, however, you could double that, spending around 40 hours with the game.
Fable has been built in a way, though, that the fun never really ends. Developers have made reference to the limitless potential of the life sim mechanics it features, revealing that you can play “for as long as you want”.
Expectations are high surrounding Fable, especially given Xbox’s internal gutting of its own line-up. Fable needs to be special, but it certainly keeps looking as if it has the potential to be just that.
