EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Comedian and El Paso native Ric James is returning to his hometown for a series of performances at the Comic Strip Comedy Club, bringing his comedy career full circle while honoring a close friend, and giving back to fellow veterans.
James is scheduled to headline shows October 29 through November 1 at the Comic Strip. The homecoming marks a meaningful milestone for the comedian, who is also a military veteran and says returning to perform for the community where he grew up holds special significance.
Born in El Paso, James draws much of his comedy from cultural differences, everyday experiences, and the humor found in people’s backgrounds. According to his biography, he began performing stand-up in 2009, developing a style shaped by observations about diversity and his own experiences growing up along the U.S.-Mexico border. His background in slam poetry has also helped shape his stage presence.
The return to El Paso carries an emotional connection as well. The last time James performed in the city, he shared the stage with his close friend and fellow comedian Kabir Singh, known for his appearances on America’s Got Talent and Comedy Central. Singh recently died at age 39. James described him as a little brother and says he continues pursuing comedy while carrying forward his friend’s legacy.
Beyond the performances, James is using the shows to recognize and support the military community. Through outreach to past and present service members, he says more than 450 tickets have already been confirmed by veterans. As a veteran himself, James hopes the initiative will give fellow service members an opportunity to enjoy a night of comedy while strengthening connections within the community.
For James, the upcoming performances are an opportunity to reconnect with El Paso, remember a friend who helped shape his journey, and share his success with a community that remains an important part of his story.
