While Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II is coming next year, <a href="https://comicvibe.com/lanterns-update-james-gunn-on-hals-true-fate-and-my-obsession-with-guy-gardner/” title=”Lanterns update: James Gunn on Hal's true fate; and my obsession with Guy Gardner”>James Gunn is still planning to bring his version of Batman to the big screen after that. However, that movie will have to wait until Reeves finishes his run on the alternate Earth Batman. Until then, James Gunn has a Batman-adjacent project that might have news coming sooner than anyone might have expected. Gunn hasn’t made any announcements yet, and he is the one person who has to say it for it to be true, but there are now rumors from Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider that indicate that the casting is now underway for Dynamic Duo.

According to The InSneider, there are names cast already for the two young heroes, Jason Todd and Dick Grayson, and a bigger name for Batman himself. According to the rumors, Mason Thames has signed on to play Dick Grayson, Logan Kim as Jason Todd, and Marsai Martin as Barbara Gordon in Dynamic Duo. Chris Pine has been offered the role of Batman.
What We Know About Dynamic Duo Casting

This casting has nothing to do with the future of Batman in the DCU. That is because Gunn has said that Dynamic Duo is not in the mainstream DCU and it will be an Elseworlds project, similar to Matt Reeves’ Batman movies. Regardless, bringing in a major star like Chris Pine to play Batman is an interesting choice to voice Batman, and it is not a casting choice that anyone likely saw coming. Pine has been in DC movies before, as he played Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman movies in the DCEU. He likely wouldn’t make a good live-action Batman because he is also not as imposing as some fan-casting choices like Alan Ritchson, but neither was Christian Bale.
If Pine accepts the role as the voice of Batman in Dynamic Duo, it will likely be a one-shot deal because Gunn will cast someone else to play Batman in The Brave and the Bold, which will be Batman’s live-action debut in the DCU.
As for the rest of the cast, these are some solid young stars. Mason Thames made his name in The Black Phone and its sequel, and his biggest role to date was playing Hiccup in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. He even looks like he could be a good live-action Dick Grayson, although since this is an Elseworlds project, it also likely won’t happen. Logan Kim got his big break in the Ghostbusters franchise, where he played Podcast in both Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. He also played Maggie and Glenn’s son, Hershel, in The Walking Dead: Dead City. Marsai Martin was a child actor who played Diane Johnson on Black-ish.
Dynamic Duo might be the most interesting upcoming DC movie since it is going to use a mixed animation style. Swaybox Studios will use a blend of CGI animation, stop-motion puppetry, and live-action real-time performances. Directed by Arthur Mintz and written by Matthew Aldrich (Coco), this might be the most unique-looking animated movie DC has ever released. The movie will see Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as childhood friends. However, when they get older, Dick becomes Batman’s protege and Jason joins Joker’s gang.
Dynamic Duo is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
