The fantasy-sports platform is moving towards an AI-first sports engagement model.

Dream11’s AI pivot is about monetising sports fandom after fantasy

The fantasy-sports platform Dream11 is moving towards an AI-first sports engagement model, betting that its existing user base can be monetised through content, personalisation and interaction even after the collapse of its real-money gaming business.

It has moved away from paid fantasy contests and is building a platform combining live scores, statistics, commentary, content, communities, social contests and sports experiences. AI will sit at the centre of the new product, personalising what users see based on their interests.

The shift changes the company’s commercial proposition.

Dream11’s biggest advantage in making this transition is the scale it has already built.

The company has more than 300 million users, giving it a sports audience that would be extremely expensive for a new media platform to acquire from scratch.

The challenge is converting that audience into an asset without the transaction that originally made each user valuable.

Fantasy sports created a direct payment relationship: users participated in contests, paid entry fees, and competed for prizes. The new model has to generate value from how long users stay, what they consume, and how frequently they return.

That makes engagement the new currency.

This is where the AI-first positioning becomes commercially relevant.

Instead of treating its 300 million users as one large audience, Dream11 can use AI to personalise their experience around specific sports, teams, leagues and players.

A cricket fan could receive a feed built around scores, statistics and commentary, while a football or Formula 1 follower could receive a completely different experience.

The objective is simple: make the platform more relevant to each individual user, and therefore give them more reasons to return.

That could increase the value of advertising and sponsorship inventory while creating opportunities to monetise premium content, experiences and other services.

Replacing a very different revenue model

But the economics are harder than simply building a bigger sports app.

The regulatory changes surrounding real-money gaming effectively wiped out the business model that had driven Dream Sports’ earlier growth.

The company therefore needs to prove that engagement-based monetisation can eventually replace a model in which users directly generated transaction revenue.

A fantasy contest can generate revenue every time a user participates. A sports-content platform has to repeatedly attract attention before that attention can be converted into advertising, sponsorship or other commercial value.

Dream11 therefore has to make its users stay, not just play.

The company’s AI pivot is ultimately a bet on the value of its audience.

Dream11 already spent years building one of India’s largest sports communities. Rather than abandoning that audience after fantasy sports became commercially constrained, it is attempting to change what that audience does on the platform.

The question is whether 300 million fantasy-sports users can become 300 million sports consumers.

If Dream11 can make that transition, its biggest asset may no longer be its fantasy contests.

It could be the attention of the sports fan.
