Installing an SSD in your PlayStation 5 console is super easy and won’t void your warranty. It’s also a near essential upgrade. With games taking up as much as 100GB of space apiece, it’s very easy to max out the PS5’s stock 1TB storage, and it’s not unheard of to max out an additional 2TB of space.

The KingSpec XG7000 is very fast for a “budget” M.2 SSD. This is a PCI-E 4×4 drive with transfer speeds of up to 7,400MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write, which passes Sony’s recommended minimum requirement of 5,5000MB/s. Despite the fact that this is a budget SSD, the XG7000 is equipped with TCL 3D NAND flash memory. Most cheap SSDs use QLC memory, which has slower sustained speeds and a shorter lifespan. To save costs, the XG7000 doesn’t have onboard DRAM, and instead uses HMB, or onboard system memory for buffering. For PS5 gamers, there’s no difference.

Although you can get by without a heatsink, Sony officially recommends one, as noted in their FAQ section in their install guide. The KingSpec XG7000 doesn’t include one out of the box. Fortunately, you can find one on Amazon for about $6 and they’re very simple to install (most are attached with adhesive).
