Donald Glover is set to star in a live-action series adaptation of a video game. Netflix is developing an adaptation of PUBG, the popular battle royale video game, with Glover attached to star, write, direct, and executive produce the project.
According to Deadline, his brother and longtime creative collaborator, Stephen Glover, will also write and executive produce the adaptation. The announcement marks Glover’s first series project with Netflix. Fans of Community, however, are still awaiting news about the long-promised movie that would reunite the show’s cast.
Netflix’s PUBG adaptation brings together a high-profile creative team
The upcoming series is based on Krafton’s PUBG, originally known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Released in 2017, this game popularized the battle royale format, where up to 100 players compete to be the last person standing.
Krafton’s entertainment division, LV3H, is helping develop and produce the adaptation as the company expands the franchise beyond video games. The project also brings together Michael Schaefer for Neon TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H as executive producers.
Glover and his brother previously worked together on Atlanta, the acclaimed FX series that earned Donald two Emmy Awards for acting and directing. His other credits include Community and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, for which he was a co-creator and star. Meanwhile, Community fans continue to wait for the movie that has been promised for years, as no new update on the film accompanied the PUBG announcement.
Glover previously signed a deal with Amazon MGM Studios, which has since shifted to a first-look arrangement. He remains an executive producer on Mr. & Mrs. Smith and is expected to return in a limited capacity for its second season.
The adaptation joins Netflix’s expanding lineup of video game projects, including a live-action Assassin’s Creed series and a Gears of War film, as well as animated adaptations of Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, and Clash of Clans.
Netflix has not announced additional cast members, plot details, or a production schedule. With the series still in development, a release date remains unknown.
