DLSS 5: Modders Push Leaked Neural Rendering Into 10+ More PC Games

    Author:News DeskCategory:News, Date: 30th August, 2026

Modders have now dropped Nvidia’s leaked DLSS 5 Neural Rendering library into more than a dozen PC games, from Cyberpunk 2077 to GTA V, producing the widest set of unofficial “on vs off” comparisons yet for the AI graphics tech months before its planned commercial debut. The experiments trace back to an early access build of NBA 2K27, which unexpectedly shipped with a working copy of the Neural Rendering runtime that community developers on the RenoDX Discord server quickly reverse-engineered.

How a Basketball Game Leaked Nvidia’s Next Graphics Leap

According to Wccftech, an experimental runtime library shipped with the early access PC build of NBA 2K27, and members of the RenoDX Discord server quickly figured out how to inject its Neural Rendering functionality into games such as Control using RenoDX and ReShade. The file at the centre of the leak is a 158 MB library that RenoDX developers hooked directly into existing rendering pipelines using the 158 MB DLSS Neural Rendering library discovered in NBA 2K27 early access, with RenoDX developers connecting the library to existing game rendering pipelines without official DLSS 5 support from the developers.

Nvidia itself has described the underlying technology as a genuine architectural shift rather than a simple filter. Per the company’s official newsroom post, NVIDIA DLSS 5, arriving this fall, introduces a real-time neural rendering model that infuses pixels with photoreal lighting and materials, and is the company’s most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018. The system is built to read elements such as characters, skin, hair, fabrics, translucent materials, and different lighting conditions, allowing it to enhance effects like subsurface scattering, material sheen, and light interaction.

From Control to GTA V: The Unofficial Test List Keeps Growing

What started as a single proof-of-concept in Remedy’s Control has snowballed fast. VideoCardz reports that testers have since expanded the mod to Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Hogwarts Legacy, Black Myth: Wukong, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Starfield, Counter-Strike, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, GTA V, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Monster Hunter Wilds and Silent Hill 2. The site notes the pace of adoption was striking, as it took modders only hours to get the leaked NVIDIA DLSS 5 Neural Rendering library working in Control, with the same experimental implementation appearing in many other games less than a day later.

Crucially, none of this is sanctioned by Nvidia or the individual publishers — it is community tooling grafted onto games that were never built with DLSS 5 in mind, which is why Wccftech frames the results as an early preview rather than a finished feature. As the outlet puts it, although DLSS 5 isn’t officially available in games yet, PC gaming enthusiasts have already managed to get an early and unofficial version working.

Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Comparisons Split Opinion

The mod’s jump into Steam ports of former PlayStation exclusives has generated some of the loudest reactions so far. Push Square reports that community footage circulating this week has focused heavily on side-by-side comparisons of the new DLSS 5 model applied to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part 2, plus a widely shared clip of Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth that many viewers mocked as close to parody. Similar character-focused tests have also landed in older open-world titles, with Fandomwire noting that similar experiments have appeared in GTA 5, including footage showing Michael receiving the unofficial AI treatment.

Reaction has been mixed rather than uniformly negative. Fandomwire’s testing of the Control build found that the neural rendering effect is primarily being applied to character models, with users able to switch between several visual styles and adjust intensity — producing dramatically different results where a face can become smoother and more photorealistic, but pushing the effect too far can also make it look noticeably different from the original character.

Jensen Huang Pushes Back on “AI Slop” Criticism

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has repeatedly defended the technology against accusations that it homogenises character faces and strips away artistic intent. Asked directly about the backlash, Huang insisted the system is fundamentally different from a generic AI filter, saying “This is very different than generative AI; it’s content-control generative AI. That’s why we call it neural rendering.”

Nvidia’s own framing of the feature emphasises artist oversight rather than automation. The company’s official materials state that developers retain aesthetic control, with artists able to control intensity, color grading, and masking, allowing a studio to decide where and how strongly the neural-rendering effect appears. Whether that promise holds up once the finished version ships is precisely what the unofficial mod tests are now being used to probe, months ahead of schedule.

What’s Confirmed Ahead of the Fall 2026 Launch

Officially, DLSS 5 remains unreleased. Nvidia unveiled the feature back in March at GTC 2026, confirming via press release that DLSS 5 will be supported by the industry’s biggest publishers and game developers, including Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Games, with the announcement made in San Jose on March 16, 2026. Nvidia has since detailed the pipeline further at SIGGRAPH, but for now every public “before and after” clip doing the rounds — including the ten-plus games covered here — comes from the RenoDX community’s leaked build, not from Nvidia’s own shipping code.

For RTX 50-series owners in Australia and New Zealand, who already sit at the sharp end of GPU pricing, these unofficial comparisons offer the clearest look yet at what a technology pitched as the successor to ray tracing might actually mean for their existing library — well before local retailers or Nvidia confirm exact rollout details for the region.
