Hold onto your Mickey ears, TV lovers. Disney is dusting off its IP machine once again, and this time, they are coming for your nostalgia. Disney+ has officially handed a pilot order toSpaceship Earth, a brand-new sci-fi adventure series based on Epcot’s most iconic, giant-golf-ball-shaped landmark attraction.

Because why leave a perfectly good, 15-minute theme park ride alone when you can stretch it into an ongoing television drama? If you are worried this is just going to be an hour of Dame Judi Dench explaining the invention of the printing press while you sit in a slow-moving vehicle, you can relax. Disney is pivoting hard into a narrative drama that sounds less like an educational school trip and more like a high-stakes ride through the space-time continuum.

The Plot: A Threat as Vast as Time Itself

The real-world Epcot ride famously tracks the history of human communication from cave drawings to the internet. The upcoming streaming adaptation, however, is ditching the textbook vibes for some classic teenage angst and cosmic danger.

According to the official logline, the story kicks off when a critical mission to stop an imminent global catastrophe goes completely sideways. Instead of saving the day, a small group of teenagers pulled from Earth’s past and future are forced to team up. Together, they have to face down a mysterious threat that spans across time itself.

It sounds a bit likeThe Umbrella Academy meetsTomorrowland, which is either your ultimate dream show or a recipe for severe whiplash.

The Creative Team: Heavy Hitters and Sci-Fi Veterans

Say what you want about Disney turning theme park infrastructure into streaming content, but they are not skimping on the talent behind the camera. The creative roster for the pilot is packed with names that know exactly how to handle high-concept genre television.

Showrunner and writer Jason Fuchs is penning the pilot and running the project. He is currently a hot commodity in Hollywood, fresh off co-creating the upcoming HBO prequel seriesIT: Welcome to Derry and writing the spy thrillerArgylle.

Executive producer Michael Waldron is also on board. If you liked the timeline-bending antics of Marvel’sLoki or are anticipatingAvengers: Doomsday, you have Waldron to thank. He brings plenty of experience in multiversal headaches to this new venture.

Director Lee Toland Krieger is attached to direct the pilot. Krieger has a fantastic track record of setting the visual tone for major hits likeYou,Riverdale, and Netflix’sShadow and Bone.

What This Means for Disney+ and the Fans

Disney’s track record with ride-to-screen adaptations is a bit of a rollercoaster. For everyPirates of the Caribbean that dominates the global box office, there is aHaunted Mansion reboot or aTomorrowland that leaves audiences scratching their heads.

However, the decision to target Epcot’s retro-future aesthetic is a clever move. Generation X and Millennials hold a deep affection for the park’s early-90s techno-optimism. If the showrunner can tap into that specific brand of nostalgia while delivering a genuinely thrilling sci-fi mystery, Disney might actually have a hit on its hands.

    When Can We Watch It?

Before you cancel your weekend plans to binge-watch, remember thatSpaceship Earth is currently only at the pilot order stage. This means Disney is funding the production of a single, first episode. Executives will watch that episode before deciding whether to order a full first season.

If the pilot impresses the higher-ups and gets a series pickup, industry insiders project that the show won’t actually hit Disney+ screens until 2027 or 2028. Quality time travel takes time, apparently.

In the meantime, we will be keeping a close eye on casting news to see which lucky teenagers get to save the world from inside a theme park icon.
