The Mandalorian franchise is entering a new chapter, and one of its most familiar faces from the early seasons is nowhere to be found in it.
Between the mixed box office run of The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) and Lucasfilm’s ongoing evolution of the Mando-Verse, the studio is now confirming a remake of the flagship Disney+ series through a very different lens, and pointedly leaves out Gina Carano’s Cara Dune.
A Franchise in Transition
When The Mandalorian premiered alongside Disney+ in 2019, it quickly became a phenomenon. Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu, affectionately dubbed “Baby Yoda” by fans, turned into two of the most recognizable figures in modern pop culture. Under Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, the series carriedStar Wars into a more intimate, Western-inspired storytelling mode across three seasons, while also introducing a roster of supporting characters who would go on to shape the broader franchise, including Carl Weathers’ Greef Karga, Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon, and Gina Carano’s Cara Dune.
Cara Dune, introduced in Season 1 as a former Rebel Alliance shock trooper, became one of Din Djarin’s most trusted allies and played a central role in some of the show’s biggest moments, including the Season 2 finale battle against Moff Gideon’s Dark Troopers. At the time, reports suggested she was being positioned to lead Rangers of the New Republic, one of several interconnected Disney+ spinoffs Lucasfilm had announced.
Those plans fell apart in 2021, when Lucasfilm cut ties with Carano following controversial social media posts. The decision divided fans and fueled a broader industry conversation about accountability and corporate branding. Carano later partnered with The Daily Wire on other projects and, backed financially by Elon Musk and X, filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm over her dismissal. Details of the eventual settlement were never made public, though both sides issued measured statements afterward, prompting speculation that tensions had eased behind the scenes.
On screen, the series moved forward without her. Season 3 explained Cara Dune’s absence by revealing she had joined New Republic Special Forces, and by the finale, Lucasfilm had effectively replaced her role on Nevarro with a rebuilt IG-11 (Taika Waititi), now serving as the planet’s marshal.
That torch-passing carried into The Mandalorian and Grogu itself. Behind-the-scenes imagery later revealed that IG-11 was originally set to appear in the film, reportedly in scenes tied to Nevarro, before the material was ultimately cut. Lucasfilm has not explained the removal, though pacing concerns or a desire to keep the story accessible to casual moviegoers unfamiliar with the show are the likeliest explanations. The film similarly avoids direct reference to Greef Karga, the character played by the late Carl Weathers.
Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Pascal alongside Sigourney Weaver (Colonel Ward) and Jeremy Allen White (Rotta the Hutt), The Mandalorian and Grogu marked the first theatrical Star Wars release since Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
Disney had positioned it as a cinematic comeback for the franchise, betting that the Disney+ show’s popularity would carry over to the box office. The result landed softer than hoped: the film closed its theatrical run with just over $340 million worldwide against a $165 million budget.
Favreau confirmed ahead of the release that a fourth season of the series had existed in some form, tied more directly to Grand Admiral Thrawn’s (Lars Mikkelsen) return within the New Republic timeline, but that material was shelved in favor of the theatrical pivot, with Disney and Lucasfilm wanting the film to work for audiences regardless of whether they’d seen the show.
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian Confirmed
Now, three years after the live-action series wrapped, Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group are returning to the Outer Rim together for an animated special that reimagines the show’s first three seasons through LEGO’s brick-built comedic style, continuing a tradition of parody-driven specials the franchise has released before.
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian has been confirmed to premiere on Disney+, with Lucasfilm promising an irreverent take on “your favorite stories and characters from all three seasons” of the flagship series. An early teaser poster offered a first look at Din Djarin and Grogu’s earliest meeting rendered in LEGO form, and a full trailer debuted at D23.
D23 attendees got the first look at the special ahead of its wider release, with Lucasfilm confirming an exclusive screening on Saturday, August 15, at 10 a.m. on the Hyperion stage, roughly two and a half weeks ahead of its Disney+ debut. Lucasfilm also confirmed that The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive on Disney+ on September 2, meaning the film’s streaming premiere and the LEGO special’s debut share the same release date.
The confirmed voice cast for the special includes: Gavin Hammon as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian; David Acord as Grogu/MA-13; Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto; Bill Burr as Migs Mayfield; David Pasquesi as Majordomo; Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze; Emily Swallow as the Armorer; Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon; Matthew Wood as Bib Fortuna/Jawas/Kowakian Monkey Lizard; Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand; Nick Nolte as Kuiil; Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano; Taika Waititi as IG-11/IG-12; Temeura Morrison as Boba Fett; Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth; Andre Sogliuzzo as Mythrol/Stormtroopers; Carl Lumbly as Greef Karga; Eric Bauza as Luke Skywalker/EV-9D9; Flula Borg as The Client; Marti Matulis as Vane; Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Carson Teva; Shelby Young as Anzellans/Jawas; Steve Blum as Stormtroopers/Zeb Orrelios; and Trevor Devall as Dark Trooper/Dorian Shard/Pit Droid.
Notably absent from that roster is any actor reprising Cara Dune–Gina Carano, or otherwise. Given the character’s prominence across the show’s first two seasons, her exclusion here mirrors her live-action fade-out and effectively confirms that Lucasfilm’s rebuilt IG-11, voiced again by Waititi, has become the character’s full replacement across the franchise.
The Mandalorian remains one of Disney+’s strongest original properties, but its theatrical transition hasn’t generated the box office enthusiasm many inside the company anticipated. Lucasfilm still has other theatrical Star Wars projects in active development, including upcoming films from Dave Filoni and Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) from Shawn Levy, starring Ryan Gosling.
But between The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s box office trajectory and the LEGO special’s quiet erasure of Cara Dune, it’s clear the Mando-Verse is being rebuilt around a different cast of characters than the one that first made the franchise a phenomenon.
