Disney+ has spent years giving Star Wars fans a steady stream of new adventures, making the service the franchise’s biggest home outside the movie theater. That made it easy to expect another packed calendar of live-action releases every year.
Instead, Disney has now walked away from that pattern, scrapping an entire year of live-action Star Wars shows. Here’s what happened, why it happened, and why so many fans are reacting with disappointment.
A First for Disney+ Since Launch
Since The Mandalorian (2019) debuted, Disney+ has become the centerpiece of Lucasfilm’s storytelling strategy. One live-action series followed another, with titles like The Book of Boba Fett (2021), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), Andor (2022), Ahsoka (2023), and The Acolyte (2024) keeping subscribers engaged year after year.
That streak officially comes to an end in 2026.
During Disney’s 2026 Upfront presentation, Lucasfilm confirmed that Season 2 of Ahsoka (2023) will no longer arrive this year. Instead, the series has been pushed to early 2027, despite production wrapping back in October 2025.
The delay creates an unusually long break between seasons. By the time Rosario Dawson returns as Ahsoka Tano to continue the battle against Grand Admiral Thrawn, fans will have waited roughly three and a half years since the first season premiered in August 2023. That’s the longest gap between seasons for any live-action Star Wars series so far.
Animation Keeps Going, but It’s Not the Same
The absence of live-action content doesn’t mean Disney+ is completely without Star Wars programming.
Lucasfilm has continued supporting its animated lineup. Maul – Shadow Lord premiered earlier this year, and The Ninth Jedi, a spinoff from Star Wars: Visions (2021), is scheduled to begin streaming in August on Disney+ and Hulu.
Those projects certainly give animation fans something to watch, but they don’t replace what many viewers have come to expect over the last several years. Live-action storytelling has driven much of the conversation around Star Wars since The Mandalorian arrived, introducing new characters while bringing familiar faces back into the spotlight.
Without a live-action release in 2026, Disney+ suddenly feels very different for longtime subscribers who have followed the franchise’s streaming era from the beginning.
Lucasfilm’s Focus Has Changed
The missing television slate isn’t happening by accident.
Lucasfilm’s current release schedule suggests a greater emphasis on theatrical projects over Disney+ originals.
That strategy became much more obvious after The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) reached theaters earlier this year. Unfortunately for Lucasfilm, the movie struggled commercially, earning about $340 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing Star Wars film released during Disney’s ownership of the franchise.
Even so, Lucasfilm isn’t abandoning theatrical releases. The studio is already looking ahead to Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), starring Ryan Gosling, which is expected to arrive in May 2027.
The leadership transition at Lucasfilm also plays a role. With Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan now overseeing the studio following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure, the company’s priorities appear to be shifting. For now, streaming no longer sits at the center of the franchise’s long-term plans.
Marvel Keeps Moving While Star Wars Slows Down
Disney hasn’t stopped producing streaming shows altogether.
Marvel Studios has reduced its Disney+ output compared to previous years, but it continues developing multiple live-action projects at once. VisionQuest (2026) is scheduled to debut this October,Daredevil: Born Again (2025) is already filming another season, and Wonder Man (2025) has also secured a second season.
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm currently has just one officially confirmed live-action series in production: Ahsoka Season 2.
For fans accustomed to multiple announcements every year, that’s a dramatic slowdown.
Could Familiar Favorites Return?
Another question centers on Din Djarin and Grogu.
Before The Mandalorian & Grogu became a feature film, reports indicated Jon Favreau had already written a fourth season of The Mandalorian (2019). The theatrical release ultimately replaced those television plans.
Now that the movie underperformed at the global box office, some fans believe Lucasfilm could reconsider that original direction.
A fourth season would allow Din Djarin and Grogu’s story to continue without requiring another major theatrical gamble. It also makes sense because the recent film didn’t provide a definitive ending for either character, while Dave Filoni’s once-anticipated crossover movie appears increasingly uncertain.
Whether Lucasfilm chooses that path remains unknown, but streaming may once again become the most natural home for those characters.
What’s Next for Star Wars on Disney+?
For the first time since Disney+ launched, Star Wars fans are facing an entire calendar year without a new live-action series. Animation continues to keep the franchise active, but the absence of live-action programming marks a major departure from the release strategy that defined Disney+ throughout the 2020s.
With Ahsoka delayed until 2027, movie plans taking priority, and several television projects remaining stuck in development rumors, the future of Star Wars on Disney+ feels more uncertain than it has in years. Fans know more stories are likely on the way eventually. The bigger question is when Lucasfilm will decide it’s time to bring live-action Star Wars back to the streaming spotlight.
