Diljit Dosanjh is set to perform at the Latin Grammys. The Latin Recording Academy announced 14 more performers on November 5. His name sits beside some of the biggest in Latin music.
The ceremony takes place on November 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It is the 27th edition of the awards.
The Latin Grammys celebrate Spanish and Portuguese language music. A Punjabi singer from India on that stage shows how far Dosanjh’s reach has grown.
Who else is performing
The new additions include Karol G, Jay Wheeler, Bad Gyal, Bizarrap, DJ Premier, Grupo Niche, Luis Enrique and Nathy Peluso. Baby Ranks, Miguel Colón, Divino, Lil Supa and Ángel “Cucco” Peña complete the list.
The bill was already large. Daddy Yankee, Feid, Juanes, Rosalía, Anitta, Carín León and Fonseca were confirmed earlier. Jorge Drexler, Grupo Frontera, Mon Laferte, Reik and Kany García were also named.
Few acts on the poster come from outside the Latin world. Dosanjh and DJ Premier, the American hip hop producer, are the clearest examples.
What we know about his slot
The Academy has not said what Dosanjh will perform. It has not said whether he will appear alone or with a guest. Those details are still unannounced.
There is one hint worth noting. In January, Dosanjh teased a single called “Señorita” with Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin. He shared the teaser on his birthday, January 6. No outlet has linked that track to the Latin Grammys booking. It remains a talking point for fans.
Big names, big nominations
Many of the new performers are also nominees. Karol G is up for Album of the Year and Best Urban Music Album for Tropicoqueta. She is also nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Coleccionando Heridas.”
Bad Gyal has two nominations, for her album Más Cara and the song “Choque.” Bizarrap and Daddy Yankee are up for Best Urban Performance and Best Urban Song.
Songwriter Edgar Barrera leads the field with ten nominations. Rosalía, Karol G, Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso and Jorge Drexler follow with seven each.
A tribute to Willie Colón
The night will also honour a salsa legend. A special tribute will celebrate trombonist and bandleader Willie Colón. Ennio Gatti will lead the performance. Gatti will reunite the original 13-member band for the show.
Colón received the Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, as part of its first class of honorees. He also helped bring the Latin Grammys to New York in 2006.
