    • Netflix is developing a new animated series based on the popular video game franchise Diablo by Blizzard Entertainment.
    • The series will focus on the dark world of Sanctuary and the eternal war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, with Diablo as the main antagonist.
    • Blizzard Entertainment plans to expand the Diablo franchise beyond the upcoming Netflix series, with more projects in development for different platforms.

Netflix has announced a new animated series on the Diablo video game franchise. The TV series that fans have been waiting for is finally in development.

Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo is an action RPG dungeon crawler that takes place in the dark world of Sanctuary, where humanity survives amidst the eternal war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. The main antagonist of the series is Diablo, the Lord of Terror. He is one of the seven Great Evils presiding over the Burning Hells.

The Netflix project marks Blizzard’s latest push beyond video games

Blizzard promises future projects in the Diablo franchise beyond the upcoming Netflix animated series.

“After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens,” the video game developer said in the official description of the series.

“A new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes,” they added.

Blizzard president Johanna Faries previously announced the development of the Diablo animated series during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center last week.

Speaking with Variety, Faries said, “BlizzCon in and of itself represents so much for all of us to be able to shine a light on all the great work going on at Blizzard.” She added, “We have put a lot of thought into this moment, and why now. And how do we continue to capture and build on the momentum we’re experiencing as an organization.”

The first Diablo game was released in 1996. This year marks the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The latest installment in the RPG video game series, Diablo IV, arrived in 2023.
