After fans criticized the new one-word feedback rule on Dancing With the Stars, Derek Hough responded by quoting notorious wordsmith Michael Scott.
The dancer-turned-judge addressed the backlash by poking fun at it with a video lip-synching The Office regional manager’s viral explanation for being confused: “I knew exactly what to do, but in a much more real sense I had no idea what to do.”
On TikTok, Hough added the caption, “I didn’t get the memo.” Over on Instagram, he cited a one-word adjective made famous in Mary Poppins: “Should’ve busted out Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” wrote Hough.
Tuesday night’s episode, coincidentally “Viral Hits Night,” shook up the competition when host Alfonso Ribeiro announced that judges Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli would have to cut their critiques short for all 14 dances.
“Because this show is super packed, our third judge for each couple will sum up their thoughts in just one word,” Ribeiro explained at the start of the show.
The new rule resulted in critiques such as “shaky,” “fabulous,” “charmed,” and “beautiful” (Hough’s thoughts on Harry Shum Jr.’s Viennese Waltz).
For “Viral Hits Night,” the couples danced to songs that were popularized on social media, such as Katseye’s “Animal,” “No Broke Boys” by Disco Lines and Tinashe, and DNCE’s “Cake by the Ocean.”

Ultimately, Giada De Laurentiis’ salsa performance of Becky G’s “Bella Ciao” — which earned only a 12 from the judges — wasn’t enough to advance in the competition, and the chef and her pro partner Alan Bersten were eliminated.
“I tried my best, and it wasn’t best enough,” lamented De Laurentiis. “But I did try my best.”
