Marvel Studios is switching up part of its formula for the next chapter of its Netflix reboot, Daredevil: Born AgainSeason 3. After a shaky first season and a strong second season, Marvel’s Netflix reboot on Disney+ is now in full swing, with all of the characters from the old Netflix era steadily being drawn back into the MCU. However, the addition of one returning character in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 will shift up the rebooted Marvel TV universe for good.

Set photos from Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 have confirmed that Elodie Yung will be returning as the anti-hero, Elektra. Yung was sighted on the set in a new red outfit, bearing her iconic twin sai blades.

Yung was also spotted alongside Charlie Cox as Daredevil, rocking his new red and black suit, suggesting the two may be teaming up again in the rebooted Netflix universe.

Yung first debuted as Elektra in Season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil and continued the role into the crossover series The Defenders. Elektra has served as a love interest, ally, and villain to Matt Murdock and the Defenders, but her inclusion in Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Againsuggests an even more intrinsic shift for the show.

Previously, Daredevil: Born Again executive producer Aaron Moorhead had made it clear that “the supernatural doesn’t really interact with this universe as much,” and that the show focused on Daredevil as a “street-legel superhero.” Moorhead added that in this universe, “dying very often does mean that you’re actually dead.”

“What is really nice about Daredevil being a street-level superhero is that, generally, the supernatural doesn’t really interact with this universe as much, even though it is within the MCU. So that often gives much stronger consequences where punches hurt more and blood means more and getting hurt means more and dying very often does mean that you’re actually dead. But that’s all I can say.”

Fans of Netflix’s Daredevil will remember that Elektra was marked as the Black Sky, aka the living weapon that is worshipped by the Hand and destined to lead the ninja clan. When Elektra decided to ally with Murdock against Nobu Yoshioka in Season 2 of Daredevil, she was killed in battle, but was later resurrected by the Hand with the Resurrection Elixir.

This resurrection ritual was an overtly supernatural element to add to the Netflix Marvel universe at the time, and with Elektra’s return now confirmed for Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, it will subsequently be infused into the Disney+ reboot as well, breaking the established formula of a grounded street-level superhero show.

The last audience saw of Elektra she was seemingly crushed to death alongside Murdock in the Midland Circle building collapse in The Defenders. However, Murdock managed to survive; it makes sense Elektra found a way too, or she was simply resurrected again by the Hand’s methods. Fans will soon find out the reason and whether Elektra’s inclusion could bring in any further supernatural elements.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is currently in production with a likely release date in 2027 on Disney+. The series stars Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye.

How the Supernatural Could Impact Daredevil: Born Again’s Formula

Bringing back a character like Elektra for Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, who has inherent supernatural roots, could shake up the show and move it away from its grounded formula.

Of course, one of the advantages Daredevil: Born Again has a reboot is that it chooses what to acknowledge from the previous Netflix series. From the start, Daredevil: Born Again has often tried to acknowledge the past without overtly referencing it, allowing the show to feel like a continuation while also being free with its creative choices. The same might be true for Elektra’s reintroduction, where her past with Matt is referenced but not necessarily her supernatural resurrection, which would help keep those elements in the background.

That said, Elektra’s reintroduction might also be an advantage for the show if it wants to steadily incorporate more supernatural elements. Season 3 is also set to include Finn Jones as Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist, whose power set is far more mystical than those of the other street-level Defenders heroes. Adding Elektra and Iron Fist are two ways Daredevil: Born Again can still become more mystical without necessarily losing its grounded tone.

That would open a lot of creative doors for Daredevil: Born Again creatively as well, as the show can lean into some of the wilder, more supernatural comic arcs (and allow him to interact with more elements from the wider MCU) rather than sticking to grounded storylines.

That said, the darker, more realistic, gritty tone and world are what Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again have become known for, so straying too far from this by leaning into supernatural elements risks ruining what fans love about the series.
