Connoisseurs and enthusiasts of art and culture across Offaly enjoyed a vibrant evening of free events in towns and villages throughout the county. Venues across the county welcomed people of all ages to experience culture in its many forms on Culture Night, which was celebrated on September 18.
From Birr and Banagher to Tullamore, Edenderry, Clara, Daingean, Mucklagh and Cloghan, audiences embraced an evening of music, dance, visual arts, storytelling, heritage, workshops and community celebrations. Family, friends and visitors encountered new artistic experiences, in exhibitions, performances, workshops and more, creating an atmosphere of discovery, participation and connection.
Among the highlights of the evening was Teach Ceoil at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, Offaly’s contribution to the national Culture Night Late programme. Curated by Ruairí O’Shea, the event transformed the theatre into a contemporary gathering place inspired by the Irish rambling house tradition, bringing together music, poetry and storytelling in a memorable late-night celebration featuring Aoife Wolf, Patrick Heffernan, Adam Tarahoui and Eileen Casey.
At Birr Castle Demesne, audiences engaged with Transition, an exhibition by Diarmuid Mollin, exploring the evolving landscapes of Ireland’s peatlands. The exhibition encouraged reflection on ecology, heritage, memory and place, highlighting the deep connections between Offaly’s natural environment and cultural identity.
Dance and movement featured strongly throughout this year’s programme at Esker Arts, Tullamore. Ancestral Echoes and Streetwise Steps: A Common Thread of Ancient Roots to Urban Groove, curated by Terri Dale Kearney, captivated the audience with a colourful multicultural performance bringing together artists from Irish, Indian, Canadian, Spanish and American traditions. Combining classical Indian dance, hip hop, tribal and contemporary movement with live music, the work celebrated cultural exchange, diversity and the power of artistic collaboration.
Another audience favourite was Vixens of Éire, an ambitious new performance blending aerial and pole dance, mythology, music and movement. Specially commissioned for Culture Night Offaly, the work brought an exciting contemporary interpretation of Irish folklore to life.
Also at Esker Arts, Night at the Museum by Donlon Dance Company transformed the museum experience a living stage, weaving together dance, storytelling and art in an engaging and memorable audience experience.
In Banagher, Howling in the Metaverse: Ode to the Irish Wolf by Patrick Hough, Sheila Hough and John Hough offered one of the evening’s most distinctive experiences. Combining photography, sculpture, visual art and virtual reality technology, the work explored themes of wilderness, mythology, memory and extinction through the story of the Irish wolf, creating a thought-provoking encounter where folklore and digital innovation met.
Music also played a central role in celebrations across the county. At John Lee’s Bar & Music Venue, audiences enjoyed a lively programme of performances showcasing both established and emerging musicians, while traditional music sessions, community choirs and live concerts filled venues throughout Offaly with song and celebration. Events such as Cultures of Edenderry reflected the county’s growing cultural diversity, bringing communities together through music, food, performance and shared traditions in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Offaly County Council Arts Office thanked all participating artists, performers, venues, community groups, volunteers and audiences whose enthusiasm and commitment made Culture Night Offaly 2026 a memorable success.
