Crunchyroll is the largest streaming hub for anime fans across the globe, with more series in its library than one can count. Among the many fan-favorite series on the platform, one of them isYona of the Dawn, a romance fantasy based on a critically acclaimed manga written and illustrated by Kusanagi Mizuho. The manga began serialization in Hakusensha’s Hama to Yume magazine in 2009 on a monthly schedule. Following the manga’s success, Studio Pierrot released an anime adaptation in 2014. However, while the anime wasn’t a global hit right away, it became popular over the years, leading to major discussions about the second season. It took the anime a decade to confirm the sequel, but at least fans finally got a promising update.

In December last year, the manga ended its serialization with an official confirmation of an anime sequel. While fans await updates on the anime’s return, the manga will release its final volume on October 20th, 2026. The release date is only for fans in Japan, but the English translation is almost caught up, so international fans won’t have to wait long. Mizuho worked on a brand new illustration featuring Yona, Hak, Soo-won, Yoon, and the Four Dragon Warriors. The visual is part of a collaboration cafe event, which will open next month in Japan.

While it’s been several months since the anime sequel was confirmed, there hasn’t been a single update regarding the project. During the announcement, the sequel didn’t share a new anime visual or any details regarding the production. Not only that, but everything about the sequel is unknown, including the animation studio. Studio Pierrot is the studio behind the first season, but there’s no official confirmation that it will return to adapt the series after more than a decade.
The sequel is expected to be released in a TV season format, but fans didn’t get any updates on that either. The first season reached its conclusion in 2015, leaving fans hoping for a sequel for a decade. While the anime sequel confirmation took the internet by storm, the delay in updates confirms that fans will have to wait much longer than expected.

The first season only set up the premise of the story, featuring the beginning of the hardships Yona has to go through in order to fulfill her destiny. After losing her father and her home on the night of her 16th birthday, Yona’s bodyguard and childhood friend, Hak, helped her survive by escaping the castle. The duo learned about the Four Dragon Warriors from the ancient legend and embarked on a quest to find them.
The first season ended right after Yona gathered the Dragon Warriors, but the path ahead of her is going to be more difficult than ever. As featured in the anime’s opening scene, Yona and her friends will be protecting Kouka Kingdom from the shadows, protecting it from invaders. The group will travel throughout the Kingdom and beyond, fighting corruption and injustice in every corner to help as many people as possible
