Crunchyroll has acquired worldwide rights and India excluding the rest of Asia to Makoto Shinkai’s anticipated follow-up to his $300m-plus 2023 global hit Suzume.
Title, plot details, and release date will be announced in due course. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures will partner on distribution, as they did on Suzume.
Shinkai’s career has expanded the appeal of Japanese animation through films like 2016 release Your Name.,which grossed more than $400m worldwide and earned director and screenplay Japan Academy Film Prize awards, a first for an animated feature.
Weathering With You opened in 2019 and became Japan’s official Oscar submission.
Shinkai has been in the awards conversation for decades. His 2007 release 5 Centimeters Per Second earned the best animated feature film prize at Asia Pacific Screen Awards, while 2013’s The Garden Of Words won best anime feature film at Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film.
