Confirmed: Disney+ Set To Change Forever in October, All Subscriptions Affected

Disney is making another change to the way subscribers watch content across Disney+ and Hulu, and the revision is set to become much more noticeable in October.

Over the last few years, Disney has worked to bring its streaming services closer together. Hulu programming has become increasingly connected with Disney+, while live programming, podcasts, sports, and other forms of entertainment have expanded what subscribers can find beyond traditional movies and television shows.

Now, Disney has confirmed another piece of that strategy.

Beginning in October, Disney+ will lean further into a more passive style of streaming through Playlists, a feature designed to keep movies and episodes playing without requiring subscribers to choose every individual title.

At the same time, Disney’s newly released October schedule shows just how much Disney+ and Hulu are beginning to overlap.

Disney Confirms New Disney+ Playlists for October

The biggest change isn’t a new movie or television series.

Disney has confirmed that Playlists are coming to Disney+ as a new way for subscribers to watch programming. Rather than searching for one movie, finishing it, and then deciding what comes next, viewers will be able to select a themed collection and keep watching.

Disney describes Playlists as a “continuous, lean-back viewing experience” that will still include full playback controls.

In other words, the idea sounds a little closer to turning on a traditional television channel.

Some of the options Disney has already confirmed include Action and Adventure Movies, Romantic Comedies, Pixar Movies, Mickey and Friends, Bluey, and Modern Family.

That creates a considerably different experience from the streaming model subscribers have become accustomed to.

Halloween Will Put the New Feature to Work

Disney also isn’t waiting long to use Playlists around its biggest franchises and seasonal programming.

October will naturally put a heavy focus on Halloween, and Disney has confirmed several seasonal Playlists.

Those include Halloween Episodes, Halloween Movies, Halloween Throwbacks, Huluween Episodes, Huluween Movies, and The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror. Disney says seasonal Playlists will continue to appear throughout the year.

That could make the feature especially useful during holidays.

Instead of manually building a Halloween marathon, for example, subscribers could choose the appropriate Playlist and allow Disney+ to continuously serve programming that fits the theme.

It also gives Disney another way to surface older movies and television episodes that might otherwise get buried inside its enormous streaming library.

Disney+ and Hulu Are Sharing More Programming

The October schedule reveals another notable development: Disney continues placing programming across both Disney+ and Hulu rather than keeping everything strictly separated.

Several October releases are specifically listed for “Disney+ and Hulu.”

On October 2, Adventure Time: Side Quests Season 2 and Coven Academy Season 1 will premiere on both services with all episodes available. The 2026 Austin City Limits Music Festival will also livestream across Disney+ and Hulu beginning that day and continue through October 4.

The crossover continues deeper into the month.

Between Steps, a Hulu Original, will premiere on both platforms on October 5. Other shared programming includes Merry Berry Love, Surviving Alaska: Women of the Wild, Megastorm, and several podcasts.

For subscribers who remember when Disney+ and Hulu felt like two completely separate products with very different identities, the October lineup looks noticeably different.

Hulu Gets a Huge October Library Refresh

Hulu will also receive a sizable collection of familiar movies as soon as October begins.

October 1 brings all four original Die Hard movies currently listed in Disney’s schedule: Die Hard (1988), Die Hard 2(1990), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), and Live Free or Die Hard (2007).

The same day brings Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016), Grown Ups (2010), Grown Ups 2 (2013), Hotel Transylvania (2012), Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015), and all three Night at the Museum movies.

October’s horror push gets even stronger shortly afterward.

Hulu adds The Substance (2024) on October 2, followed by Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019) on October 3.

Later in the month, the service will add five Hunger Games movies on October 14, ranging from The Hunger Games(2012) through The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023).

Disney+ Has Its Own Major October Arrivals

Disney+ isn’t relying entirely on its connection with Hulu.

The service will premiere Season 2 of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+ on October 1, followed by Season 3 of Pupstruction on October 2.

Halloween programming ramps up on October 7 with special episodes of Big City Greens and Kiff, along with a Phineas and Ferb Halloween special. Season 2 of Vampirina: Teenage Vampire will also arrive with every episode available.

One of the month’s bigger Disney+ premieres comes October 14 with VisionQuest. New episodes will continue on October 21 and October 28.

Disney+ is also continuing its move beyond on-demand entertainment. Dancing with the Stars Season 35 will stream live on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET, while The Banana Bowl streams live October 10 at 8 p.m. ET.

    Disney’s Streaming Strategy Keeps Evolving

Taken together, Disney’s October schedule shows a streaming business that looks increasingly different from the Disney+ that originally launched.

The service isn’t simply a library where subscribers select a Disney, Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars movie anymore.

There are livestreams. There are podcasts. ABC programming is part of the equation. Hulu Originals can appear across both Disney+ and Hulu. And now Playlists will give subscribers another way to consume programming without selecting every title themselves.

The Playlist addition may sound relatively small compared with a major pricing change or app redesign, but it changes one of the fundamental behaviors associated with streaming.

For years, streaming put the viewer completely in control of what played next. Disney is now giving subscribers an option that requires considerably less decision-making.

October will provide one of the clearest demonstrations yet of what that revised Disney streaming experience looks like.

And with Hulu programming, live events, podcasts, seasonal collections, and traditional Disney+ releases increasingly sitting alongside one another, the line separating Disney’s streaming services continues to get thinner.
