Every summer, for four days, San Diego transforms completely. Forget baseball, the Padres, beaches, surfers, and sunny patios—the city becomes the kingdom of superheroes, Jedi, manga, dragons, and every imaginary universe imaginable. Welcome to Comic-Con 2026. Story by Franck Pedretti.

Founded in 1970 by a small group of comic book enthusiasts, Comic-Con International has grown over the past half-century into the world’s biggest pop culture event. The 56th edition, held from July 23 to 26, 2026, once again confirmed its status as a must-attend gathering, welcoming more than 130,000 visitors from around the globe.

Today, Comic-Con is no longer just about comic books. Movies, television series, video games, manga, collectible toys, artists, content creators, and Hollywood studios all converge in San Diego to unveil their latest projects and connect with passionate fans. For four unforgettable days, the city becomes the global capital of imagination.

The show begins in the streets

From the early hours of the morning, lines wind around the San Diego Convention Center (111 Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101). Some fans wait for hours—or even camp overnight—for the chance to enter the legendary Hall H, where Hollywood unveils its biggest announcements.

But the real show starts long before anyone walks through the doors.

Visitors themselves become part of the attraction. Thousands of cosplayers showcase costumes that are sometimes even more impressive than those seen in Hollywood productions. Elaborate armor, intricate makeup, and accessories crafted over months are all expressions of remarkable creativity.

You’ll encounter Darth Vader, Spider-Man, Batman, manga heroes, video game characters, and plenty of entirely original creations.

    Stars… and even bigger surprises

Every year, certain appearances become part of Comic-Con legend.

It’s impossible to talk about Comic-Con without mentioning Stan Lee, Marvel’s legendary figure and one of pop culture’s greatest icons. As the co-creator of unforgettable characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four, he embodied the spirit of Marvel. His appearances in San Diego were always emotional celebrations shared with devoted fans.

Long before blockbuster movies and cutting-edge visual effects, it all began with a handful of comic book pages and characters who made superheroes feel deeply human.

The 2026 edition delivered its own unforgettable surprises. Johnny Depp stole the spotlight by appearing in the streets of the Gaslamp Quarter, dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming film, turning a marketing campaign into an impromptu street performance.

Another standout moment came when Ryan Reynolds, disguised from head to toe as Deadpool, successfully blended into the crowd before revealing his identity during a Marvel panel.

Once again, Comic-Con proved that its magic isn’t limited to the convention stages—it can appear around any street corner or during the most unexpected encounters.

Even without a badge, Comic-Con is everywhere

One of Comic-Con’s greatest strengths is that you don’t need a badge to enjoy the experience.

Around the Convention Center, movie studios and major brands compete to create free immersive experiences featuring life-sized sets, interactive attractions, exhibitions, giveaways, and meet-and-greets.

San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter transforms into one giant playground. Restaurants embrace themed décor, private parties fill the evenings, and costumed fans roam every street. The entire city lives and breathes Comic-Con.

Even local businesses join the celebration. Le Parfait Paris, the beloved French bakery well known among San Diegans, created a special lineup of desserts inspired by iconic pop culture franchises, from Star Trek and Pokémon to Spider-Man. The treats delighted both the eyes and the taste buds of fans throughout the weekend.

    The unexpected phenomenon: Standing Cat

If there was one surprise we didn’t see coming, it was the Standing Cat phenomenon.

This giant orange-and-white cat standing upright—made famous through internet memes and TikTok—was absolutely everywhere. Plush toys, figurines, keychains… you couldn’t escape it. At first, we couldn’t understand what everyone found so amusing.

    Then we gave in too.

There’s something irresistibly absurd and lovable about it. Kids adore it—but it’s often the adults who burst into laughter first.

In many ways, Standing Cat perfectly captures the spirit of Comic-Con. You arrive expecting blockbuster announcements from Hollywood, yet somehow leave with an entirely unexpected souvenir.

    See you in 2027!

Comic-Con is far more than a convention.

It’s a celebration of creativity, imagination, and community.

For four days, San Diego forgets it’s a laid-back California beach city. Superheroes stroll through downtown, Jedi ride the trolley, and dragons wait in line for coffee. And that’s probably Comic-Con’s greatest magic: for a few extraordinary days, imagination becomes reality.

To keep the excitement going, don’t miss Los Angeles Comic Con 2026, taking place October 30 through November 1at the Los Angeles Convention Center (1201 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90015).

And for French fans, Japan Expo Paris remains the premier celebration of Japanese pop culture.

But before all that, Comic-Con fans are already looking ahead to San Diego 2027. Be sure to register several months in advance… Because at Comic-Con, the first challenge isn’t choosing your costume. It’s simply getting your hands on that precious badge.

How much does the Comic-Con experience cost?

Getting a badge is almost a challenge in itself. Registration opens several months in advance, and passes sell out extremely quickly.

Here’s what you can generally expect to pay:

    – $60–$90 for a one-day badge

    – Around $250 for a four-day pass

    – $25–$50 for parking

    – Hotel rates that are often significantly higher during Comic-Con weekend

Once you factor in transportation, accommodations, and meals, a complete Comic-Con trip can easily cost more than $1,000 per person.

Our Tip:Skip the car if you can. The San Diego Trolley is by far the easiest and least stressful way to reach the San Diego Convention Center (111 Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101).

If you do decide to drive, arrive early and consider parking near Little Italy. From there, enjoy a scenic walk along the Waterfront, passing landmarks such as the Star of India and the USS Midway before arriving at Comic-Con.

And don’t forget the essentials:comfortable shoes, a portable charger, sunscreen… and plenty of patience. You’ll easily walk 10 to 12 miles (15 to 20 kilometers) in a single day.
