    What to Know

    • San Diego Public Library teamed up with artist Keithan Jones to design a limited-edition Comic-Con library card.
    • The collectable cards will be available beginning Thursday at all 36 San Diego Public Library locations while supplies last.
    • California residents can sign up for a free library card, and throughout July 2026, replacement fees have been waived for anyone looking to swap their current card for the special Comic-Con edition.
    • Those who are interested in getting their limited edition card signed by the artist himself, Jones, will be at the San Diego Public Library booth #5523 on Saturday at noon.

As Comic-Con takes over downtown, the San Diego Public Library is joining the celebration with a limited-edition library card.

The collectible library card was designed by local artist Keithan Jones, founder of KID Comics and creator of Black Com!x Day.

Jones said he wanted to make the card inviting but also have that comic book whimsical sci-fi feel to it.

“I have a family of aliens, literal aliens, from outer space visiting the San Diego library to emphasize that anyone is welcome at the facility, but also it gives it that Comic-Con vibe because you have a lot of cosplayers walking around in costume,” Jones said.

He said he also wanted to give it the “California feel,” so he knew he had to add the sunny background, the trolley, palm trees, and, of course, the ever-present seagull.

“Anyone can come to the library no matter what you look like. You are welcome in our spaces, and we want you in our spaces; that’s part of the reason that the design spoke to us,” said Oscar Gittemeier, program manager at the San Diego Public Library.

The collectable cards will be available beginning Thursday at all 36 public library locations while supplies last. All replacement fees will be waived throughout July for any California residents who want to swap their current card for the special Comic-Con edition.

For the fans attending the con, the San Diego Public Library will have a booth (#5523) where cards can be picked up.

Also, for those cosplayers, the Central Library in downtown has acosplay repair station where you will have access to sewing machines, 3D printers, laser cutters and more.

Plus, for those who are interested in getting your limited edition card signed by the artist himself, Jones will be at the San Diego Public Library booth on Saturday at noon.
