The 2026 Comic‑Con International, one of the world’s largest pop culture gatherings, concluded in San Diego on Sunday, with classic comic books standing out as highlights valued both as financial assets and cultural heritage.

The four‑day convention, plus an exclusive preview night, drew more than 135,000 registered attendees to the San Diego Convention Center. Hundreds of exhibitors filled the halls with programming across film, television, gaming, cosplay and other facets of popular culture, reinforcing Comic‑Con’s influence as a global showcase.

While Hollywood announcements dominated headlines, many long‑time attendees said the printed comic book remains the core appeal of the show floor. DC Comics spotlighted new Superman releases, and fans lined up for hours to secure a limited Comic‑Con exclusive edition of Superman Experience One, a title some collectors believe could gain extraordinary value.

The search for hidden gems drives thousands of fans through the aisles each year. One attendee, who paid a premium for a single comic, said his purchase was motivated less by profit than by a desire to share his hobby with his family.

“I paid 65 dollars. It’s more of a legacy kind of thing. I have kids growing up. I hope they appreciate comics later in life,” the buyer said.

Two factors drive a comic book’s market value: rarity and physical condition, graded on a professional 0.5‑to‑10 scale.

Bob Storms, owner of online retailer HighGradeComics.com, said comic collecting follows the same principles as investing in other vintage collectibles.

“It’s like buying any antique. You got to know what to pay and what to sell it for. And if you’re reasonable, it’s like anything, you can make money,” he said.

For those seeking the rarest and most valuable titles on the market, the convention floor offered access to some of the most coveted comics in history.

Rare comic marketplace ComicConnect brought a selection of landmark titles to this year’s show, with a 9.0-graded copy of “Action Comics 1” as the standout highlight.

First published in 1938, the issue features the very first appearance of Superman, widely recognized as the birth of the Golden Age of comic books and the dawn of the superhero genre.

The copy on display is priced at 1.4 million dollars.

Earlier this year, ComicConnect set a new world record for the highest price ever paid for a single comic book, when a 9.0 unrestored copy previously owned by actor Nicolas Cage sold for 15 million dollars.

Several other high-value collectibles also share the spotlight at the booth, including a rare Mexican printing of a “Spider-Man” issue valued at 39,000 dollars and an Endgame comic with a cover hand-drawn by Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., worth 35,000 dollars.

Industry observers note that successful film adaptations frequently lift the value ofupcoming Marvel release Avengers: “Doomsday“, in which Downey will portray the iconic villain Doctor Doom

Yet for all the seven-figure price tags and growing collector interest, every expert at the convention agreed that monetary worth should never be the primary reason to engage with the medium.

Harry Kassen, an original art and comic book specialist at ComicConnect, said genuine affection for comics is the foundation of the community.

“You choose to invest in comic books because you love comic books. These are important parts of popular culture and important parts of our lives, childhood and that’s why we’re seeking them out,” Kassen said.

For the comic community at large, collecting is ultimately a form of stewardship that preserves the unique stories, artistry and cultural history of the medium for future generations to discover and enjoy.
