A comic book adaptation series, which received acclaim from critics but no renewal from the network, may receive a second chance for future episodes upon its arrival on Netflix later this month.
Revival, the horror noir series based on the Image Comics series of the same name, premiered on Syfy last summer, but its fate hangs in the balance a year on, with no update from the network about a potential Season 2.
Described by Syfy’s official logline as “a different kind of not-quite-zombie series,” Revival is “a ‘farm noi'” murder mystery wrapped inside a mass awakening event, as recently-deceased residents in a sleepy Wisconsin hamlet rise from the grave with their past personalities fully intact.”
Created by Aaron B. Koontz (Shelby Oaks, Tales From the Void) and Luke Boyce (Revealer, The Pooka), Revivalstars Melanie Scrofano(Wynonna Earp, Ready or Not), Romy Weltman (Backstage, Ginny & Georgia), David James Elliott (JAG, Impulse), and Andy McQueen (Disappearance at Clifton Hill, Coroner).
Revival received an encouraging 90% critics’ score and 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is essential for any budding TV series looking for future renewal. Viewership, however, appears to be the biggest roadblock to a Season 2, with its premiere amassing around 250,000 viewers, down to 90,000 by episode 9, per Programming Insider.
However, as we know from other shows that previously ran the risk of cancellation, network television isn’t the whole story anymore, especially in the age of streaming. The comic book adaptation is also available on Peacock, which, with streaming numbers, often available for public viewing, could prove Revival’spopularity. Now that the show will make its debut on Netflix at the end of the summer, the streaming giant’s hundreds of millions of U.S. subscribers could help Revivalscore, well, a revival.
