Colours Of Navaratri – Day 4: Grace of a legend, style of a new gen
![]()
If there’s one colour that needs no introduction, it’s MS Blue. And who better than MS Subbulakshmi’s great-granddaughters Aishwarya and Saundarya to carry the shade forever tied to the legend’s signature style on the fourth day of Navaratri! As they say, some fashion statements are planned; others are practically written in the stars. In conversation with Chennai Times, the sisters talk festive dressing, coordinated wardrobes and the art of keeping an icon’s elegance alive. Excerpts:What does Navaratri look like in your home? Are you the kind to plan the saris weeks in advance or decide everything at the last minute?Aishwarya:Honestly, a little bit of both! We love planning our saris and colours, especially when we have performances, but sometimes the final decision happens just before we leave. Navaratri is such a beautiful time at home, so dressing up is definitely part of the excitement.Saundarya: We usually have an idea in mind, but things can change at the last minute depending on the occasion. The fun is in putting everything together — the sari, jewellery, flowers and makeup. As sisters who perform together, do you coordinate your looks or prefer contrasting styles? We actually enjoy coordinating, but not necessarily wearing identical looks. We like having a common colour palette or a similar aesthetic while still keeping our individual personalities. Since we perform together, it looks beautiful when there is harmony without being completely matching. What completes the perfect Navaratri look?Definitely the whole combination. Each element adds something different. But flowers have a very special place for us — there is something about jasmine in the hair with a traditional sari and jewellery that instantly makes it feel like Navaratri. Royal blue is particularly significant for this shoot.

Saundarya & Aishwarya
What does the colour evoke for you?Aishwarya:Elegance and power. It has a richness without being too loud.Saundarya:It feels regal and festive, and photographs beautifully. It is perfect for Navaratri.MS Subbulakshmi had such an unmistakable sense of style, from her Kanjeevarams to her jewellery and flowers. Is there anything about the way she dressed influenced your own sense of style? We have always admired how graceful and timeless she looked. She never seemed to dress for the sake of fashion — everything was elegant, traditional and understated, yet completely her own. Her Kanjeevarams, jewellery, flowers and especially the way she carried herself have definitely influenced our appreciation for traditional Indian dressing. For us, it is less about recreating her style and more about carrying forward that sense of grace and dignity in our own way.Do you think the sari has become a form of self-expression for younger generations during festivals rather than simply a traditional outfit?Definitely. Young people are finding their own ways to wear saris while appreciating their beauty. The drape, blouse, jewellery, colours and hairstyle can all reflect personality. It is about balancing individuality with the sari’s timeless appeal.
Royal blue is a statement in itself. Pair it with antique gold jewellery or a contrasting blouse, and let one detail do the talking
- Contrast is key:Pair a royal-blue sari with a contrasting blouse in gold, silver or ivory for a striking festive look.
- Drape differently:Experiment with a belted sari or a structured blouse to give the classic silhouette a modern spin.
- Jewellery that speaks: Temple jewellery and gold jhumkas bring a classic touch, while diamonds lend a contemporary finish.
- From desk to dandiya: Style a blue kurta with cigarette pants, statement earrings and embroidered juttis for an easy festive-to-work transition
- Eyes that pop: Champagne or bronze eyeshadow complements royal blue beautifully, while a subtle wing adds definition.
- A flush of colour:Peach or rose blush brings warmth to the complexion without competing with the outfit.
- Lips, your call:Choose a nude lip for understated polish or a classic berry shade for a more dramatic festive look.
- The finishing touch: A sleek bun adorned with jasmine or soft waves paired with a bindi ties the entire Navaratri look together.
