Chris Rock is opening up about his divorce.
The 61-year-old admitted that he had a porn addiction that impacted his marriage with ex-wife Malaak Compton-Rock, whom he divorced in August 2016.
“I was not a great husband,” Rock told GQ in an interview published on Tuesday. “I watched a lot of porn. I don’t watch porn anymore. I haven’t watched porn in five, six years.”
He previously discussed the detrimental effects of his porn addiction on his marriage during his 2018 Netflix stand-up special Tamborine. The comedy hour touched on his divorce and the ways in which he failed as a husband, including his infidelities. While he said he isn’t “proud” of these mistakes, Rock believes he needed to go through them in order to grow.
“It’s like you watch a Marvel movie, and the guy, he has to test his powers,” he continued to GQ. “You know what I mean? Every Marvel movie, man or woman, they have to test their powers. They’re a–holes. They get these powers and they’re a–holes, and they’re racing trains and they’re lifting up ocean liners and they try to go to the sun, then they crash down because they realize they’re not God. And then they start helping people.”
He added, “I tested my powers. I definitely realized I wasn’t God or anywhere near him, and I was severely humbled, as I should have been.”
