The biggest breakout star in music right now isn’t a Taylor Swift protégé, a billionaire nepo baby or a TikTok-famous ingenue. It’s country songstress Ella Langley, with her signature bangs and boho girl-next-door style, who has held the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 on and off for more than half of the year. She’s breaking records almost every week, eclipsing achievements by Swift, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Justin Bieber with ease.
Most recently, “Choosin’ Texas” toppled the biggest record there is on the Billboard charts, becoming the longest-running No. 1 hit that the Hot 100 has ever seen.
Langley’s twangy breakup anthem about losing her boyfriend to a woman from the Lone Star State is undeniably the biggest hit of 2026 thus far and the song of summer. It’s popular on every medium people use to listen to music, from Spotify to the radio.
Its reign has been impressively lengthy and totally unexpected, beating out tracks by pop behemoths like Swift, Drake, Olin the last few months. None has been able to best “Choosin’ Texas” for long. It pops back up every time
Whenever the song smashes another record, a chorus of confused pop music fans appears on social media, asking, “What is this and why haven’t I heard it?” That’s pretty simple to explain: Monoculture is dead, in music and in everything else. Algorithms detect your taste, on Spotify, TikTok and pretty much everywhere else online, and deliver you exactly what you want to hear. If you aren’t into country music and you don’t listen to the radio, it won’t end up on your feed, and you may mistakenly think the genre disappeared entirely. There may never be a pop culture-unifying artist like The Beatles, Michael Jackson or even Swift again, because we’ve all got our own personal superstars.
That said, Langley is still the biggest breakout artist in culture right now — a superstar to a critical mass of the country, whether or not you’ve heard “Choosin’ Texas.” It’s long been the biggest song by a female country artist, and the records it breaks are no longer beholden to genre: It’s officially bigger than “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey and “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston, mathematically speaking. But how did thissong by a relatively niche country singer become the biggest thing since “Old Town Road”?
So wait … why did we choose Texas?
Country music has a lot of outspoken critics, but in reality, it’s one of the biggest genres in the US — especially in the summer. Since 2023, a country song has been in strong contention for the song of summer title every year.
In fact, Morgan Wallen is sort of the king of summer, and country music in general, but even he couldn’t dethrone “Choosin’ Texas” with a duet with Langley herself. “I Can’t Love You Anymore” has been hovering around the Top 10 since it came out; it just hasn’t nabbed that peak spot yet.
Summer is a great time of year to listen to a country song — all the classic themes of going out, driving a pickup truck and drinking whiskey are seasonally appropriate. The bigger shock is that the person at the top of the genre right now is a woman, after other women in the industry spent years fighting for gender equality. Marcus K. Dowling, a longtime country music journalist and editor-at-large at Veeps, told me in March that it’s been a long time coming, and “Choosin’ Texas” just so happened to hit when the masses were hungry for a little country twang, warmed up by country-pop from Beyoncé and Sabrina Carpenter.
So, the conditions were perfect for a female country singer to have a smash hit. For what it’s worth, half of the Top 10 is female-led country music right now — the spots not occupied by Langley have gone to Swift (who returned to country with “I Knew It, I Knew You”) and newcomer Stella Lefty (“Boston”).
Why “Choosin’ Texas” specifically has been so dominant over its rivals is a matter of debate. There are a few undeniable elements: It’s catchy, it’s undeniably country in its references to heartache and whiskey, it was cowritten by genre titan Miranda Lambert and it has a delightfully star-studded music video that’s fun to watch. Langley herself told reporters at aMarch press conference that she doesn’t really understand why it was thissong, either. Maybe it was just time for a new Swift to emerge.
A star is born
Like Swift or Shania Twain, Langley has successfully leaped from country stardom to mainstream success — and she did so without abandoning her roots. Her latest album is as country as it can be, and her Tennessee accent and self-deprecating Southern humility dominate every interview.
“My head’s spinning around like an owl,” Langley told Yahoo’s Taryn Ryder on the red carpet of the Billboard Women in Music Awards, just after beating one of Swift’s long-held records. “You ever seen that? It’s pretty scary. It’s nuts. I’m just excited.”
I was in the crowd of the Academy of Country Music Awards in May when Langley nabbed a jaw-dropping seven trophies, and as she grew shyer and more speechless with every victory, the crowd only became louder. My colleague Kerry Justich found at the country music festival Stagecoachthat fans of the genre are divided over a lot of artists, but they can’t deny their love of Langley. She is the great unifier.
But why? My theory is that she’s just interesting enough to write a great song, but not interesting enough to alienate anyone. She’s charming and relatable, but uncontroversial and buttoned-up — a safe choice for the often politically divisive country sphere. In staying strategically soft-spoken, she seems to have cracked a formula that many of the big-but-not-mainstream women in the genre haven’t been able to. There was a void in pop culture, and she filled it with the most broadly palatable archetype possible: Clever, sweet and yes, a little boring.
Now that she’s broken through, it’ll be interesting if her persona remains low-key, or if it grows to match her stardom. “Choosin’ Texas” might be Langley’s “Espresso,” as the meme goes, but she’s not a one-hit wonder. Two of her other songs, “Be Her” and her collaboration with Wallen, are lingering atop the chart. Her April album, Dandelion,is the second-biggest of the year. She has only Wallen to dethrone on that front, and she’s toppled every other titan in her path thus far.
