Charlie Hunnam Reunites the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Cast for Wild New Spin-Off

FX’s Legends puts Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal and more in a meta-thriller where a fan convention turns dangerously real.

    Key Takeaways

    • FX has ordered Legends, a limited meta-thriller starring Charlie Hunnam and other Sons of Anarchy alumni as fictionalized versions of themselves facing a real threat at a fan convention.
    • Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi will reunite with Hunnam, who developed the series with Jonathan Groff and will write, star, and executive produce.
    • FX and Hulu will carry the spin-off, which revisits the franchise without resurrecting its dead characters; original creator Kurt Sutter is not involved.

Charlie Hunnam is getting the old crew back together, but not in the way Sons of Anarchy fans might expect. FX has ordered Legends, a limited-series spin-off that will reunite Hunnam with several members of the original cast more than a decade after the motorcycle drama ended. Instead of reviving their characters, however, the actors will play fictionalized versions of themselves in what the network describes as a “meta-thriller.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story begins when the Sons of Anarchy cast attends a fan convention and suddenly finds itself in a dangerous situation outside the world of television. According to the official synopsis, “the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”

Hunnam will lead the series alongside returning stars Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. More cast members are expected to be announced.

The unconventional premise gives FX a way to revisit Sons of Anarchy without undoing the original show’s high body count. The series followed Jax Teller, played by Hunnam, as he struggled to balance his loyalty to SAMCRO with his desire to move the outlaw motorcycle club away from its violent gunrunning operation.

Loosely shaped by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the drama positioned Jax between Perlman’s ruthless Clay Morrow and Sagal’s fiercely protective Gemma Teller Morrow. Many of its central characters—including Jax—were dead by the time the finale aired in 2014.

FX Entertainment president Nick Grad said the network immediately responded to Hunnam’s pitch. “When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” Grad said.

He added that Hunnam will showcase his abilities “as a writer, performer and executive producer,” while leading the returning ensemble through a story designed as both “a love letter to the series” and a playful challenge to viewers’ memories of it.

Hunnam developed Legends with Jonathan Groff, and both will serve as executive producers alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. FX Productions and 20th Television are producing, with the series set to air through FX and Hulu.

The original creator, Kurt Sutter, is not involved.

The project also extends Hunnam’s recent run with the network following his Emmy-nominated performance in Monster: The Ed Gein Story. He is currently working on the BBC adaptation of John le Carré’s A Legacy of Spies.

The new chapter arrives with a substantial franchise history behind it. Sons of Anarchy ran for 92 episodes across seven seasons from 2008 to 2014 and became FX’s highest-rated series at the time, surpassing established dramas including The Shield, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me.

Its first spin-off, Mayans M.C., premiered in 2018 and completed a five-season run in 2023.
