CD Projekt says it will keep making physical collector’s boxes after PlayStation disc phase out

TL;DR: CD Projekt will still produce physical collector-style boxes with tangible extras for future games despite PlayStation phasing out discs by 2028, though the company cannot control Sony’s manufacturing decisions; The Witcher 4 (due 2028) may ship without a disc, and CD Projekt is re-releasing The Witcher 3 and working on Cyberpunk 2, a Witcher 1 remake, and a new IP.

CD Projekt, like other publishers, has no choice but to follow Sony’s decision to phase out discs for new games starting in 2028…but the Polish dev will still offer some sort of physical product for new games.

The Witcher 4 is due out sometime in 2028, and while that’s exciting news, fans of physical media can’t help but notice this is after Sony’s disc cut off date. That means The Witcher 4 will ship on something else other than a Blu-ray disc, possibly a redemption token.

Popular Now: DLSS 5 has been modded into Skyrim, and it definitely transforms character faces

The Game Business recently asked CD Projekt co-CEO Michal Nowakowski about this topic at Gamescom 2026, getting a response that confirms the publisher still wants to ship some kind of physical, tangible box for gamers.

“We have no influence on the first parties. The discs for the first parties, for PlayStation, have to be manufactured in their own factories, so if they stop manufacturing, then indeed, by 2028…” Nowakowski said.

“We’re focusing on…we’re big fans of people having access to tangible, collectible things. We’re nerds ourselves, and we like that we’ve always supported that, so whatever is the case, we’re going to be for sure having a box with some feelies in it, you know, something you’re going to want to open up and enjoy.

“But we have no influence actually on what is the case here.”

Will The Witcher 4 be sold as a digital-only release given PlayStation’s disc phase-out in 2028?

What kind of physical items or “feelies” is CD Projekt promising to include in future boxed editions?

If PlayStation stops manufacturing discs, will CD Projekt use redemption codes or other non-disc media for physical boxes?

Could the new physical boxes include game installation media, or will they be limited to collectibles and redemption methods?

The publisher currently has other big plans for the series, capitalizing on more than a decade of success with a new re-release of The Witcher 3 alongside an expansion coming next year. CD Projekt is also currently working on Cyberpunk 2, as well as a remake of The Witcher 1, and early work is being done on a brand new IP.
