In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there was a great scene where Strange ended up on an alternate Earth where he met that world’s superhero protectors. Instead of the Avengers, it was a group called the Illuminati. It was a great callback to the comics, especially since the Illuminati was one of the only groups who knew the incursions were coming in the comics, and they knew all about them here as well. This was also a great place for cameos, with Patrick Stewart returning as Professor X, Anson Mount returning as Black Bolt, and Hayley Atwell returning as Captain Carter. The scene also included Lashana Lynch returning as Maria Rambeau (Captain Marvel in this world) and John Krasinski as a special cameo as Reed Richards, the result of years of fan casting.

However, one of those cast members was not happy with the scene and appearance, and she let her fans know in a recent convention panel. While appearing at the For the Love of Fantasy and Sci-Fi convention in London this month, Atwell said her appearance as Captain Carter in Multiverse of Madness was “disrespectful.”

In her panel at the For the Love of Fantasy and Sci-Fi convention in London, Atwell was asked about her appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She was not happy with how it turned out. “If I’m really, like, brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they, how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene,” Atwell said. “She’s like, ‘I could do this all day.’ And then it’s like frisbee’d to death, and we’re like, ‘No, you couldn’t.’ And then people going, ‘Oh, she’s so lame.’” Atwell also said that she wanted to add something more, and the filmmakers said they would listen, and then said no.

In this scene, Wanda Maximoff arrives and finds the Illuminati. What happens next is brutal. She asks Reed Richards if he has kids, and when he says he has kids and a wife, she brutally tells him that at least they will still have a mother and kills him. She then seals Black Bolt’s mouth so he blows his own head off and finishes off both Captain Marvel and Captain Carter in short order. Not a single member of the Illuminati has any success, including Professor X, and almost all of them die brutally, which was their only purpose here.

The good news for Atwell is that she is coming back as Agent Carter for Avengers: Doomsday, and she said in an interview at the San Diego Comic-Con that this will be much more than a cameo appearance like Multiverse of Madness was. Of course, Captain Carter more than redeemed herself in the What If Disney+ series, where fans saw what a full-fledged Peggy Carter looked like when she was slinging the shield. While this version might not appear in the MCU live-action movies, it was still a nice turnaround after her brutal death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Clayface has always been a favorite of mine when it comes to the Batman’s rogues gallery.
