Captain America No. 1 kept in a cardboard box for 80 years sells for $716,750

The Merrimack Valley Collection is a legendary comic book collection in which someone bought comics off the rack and stored them in a cardboard box for almost 80 years. Heritage Auctions sold many of these comics in a couple of auctions in Dallas last week. The top selling comic was Captain America No. 1 from 1941 in very good condition, and it sold for $716,750.

Another standout was original art from Gary Larson’s 1985 Far Side comic about socially insecure clowns. It sold for $112,500, more than double the previous Far Side record of $51,600.

Some other hits include Jerry Robinson’s 1942 cover art from Detective Comics No. 68, which was Two-Face’s first cover appearance. It sold for $475,000. Meanwhile, Joe Shuster’s cover for Action Comics No. 22 from 1940 sold for $300,000, and a 1974 painting of Scrooge by the great Carl Barks sold for $275,000.

Amazingly, a mint condition 2003 copy of The Walking Dead No. 1 sold for $56,000.

Old paper keeps fetching big money: the first Tarzan pulp sold for $58,560 in June, and a Frank Frazetta Vampirella painting sold for $3.1 million in March. If you want to read the Golden Age stuff without paying a dime, 20,000 restored comics are free online.
