Can Microsoft Brick Your Xbox Series X?

According to Xbox’s Software License Agreement, if you try to circumvent the console’s “technical limitation, security, or anti-piracy system,” your console can be rendered permanently unusable immediately or after an update. That said, it’s uncertain if that means that Microsoft will directly brick your Xbox Series X or if the company is warning against messing with the console’s hardware because it may inadvertently malfunction.

Microsoft has said that it doesn’t brick consoles as some form of retributive punishment. It had to clarify this with a statement to Kotaku when the video game news and blog website published an article in 2015 originally titled “Microsoft Punishes Gears Leakers By (Temporarily) Bricking Xbox Ones.” Kotaku changed it to “Microsoft Punishes Gears of War Leakers,” when Microsoft said its “enforcement action does not result in a console becoming unusable.”

What Microsoft can and does do, though, is suspend or ban Xbox Series X consoles from using its services. With an all-digital future that console manufacturers like Sony are pushing for, this can be concerning, and banning an account can be as bad as bricking the console. A few examples of what can get your Xbox Series X suspended include connecting a jailbroken console online (it can detect pirated software), using your console for fraudulent activity, or violating Xbox’s community guidelines and Microsoft Services Agreement. Repeat violations can lead to a console ban, depending on how serious they are.

What happens when Microsoft bans your Xbox Series X console?

When your Xbox Series X console is suspended, Xbox will notify you. Afterward, the console will lose access to specific features, such as online chat and multiplayer. A banned console, though, cannot use Xbox network features at all, including online multiplayer, streaming services, or the digital storefront. It also can’t download games since that requires connecting to Microsoft’s servers and verifying your license. Fortunately, everything you had downloaded on it before the ban remains accessible until you delete it.

The only way to play a new game is to insert a physical disc in the disc version of the Xbox Series X, but if it requires an internet connection to finish installing or play, you’re out of luck. You also can’t update the game or install any of its DLC. So a ban like this affects those with an all-digital Xbox Series X the most. In the all-digital future, bans will force people to get new consoles or jailbreak them (something we do not encourage).

Microsoft can sometimes ban your account instead of your console. Sometimes both. An account ban means you lose access to your digital library, among other things like Xbox subscriptions and Xbox network connectivity. It can be devastating if you’ve spent thousands of dollars building your digital library. It’s more devastating if both your account and console are banned.

Are Xbox bans permanent?

A suspension will lift automatically once the suspension period ends, but just as with Nintendo bans on the Switch 2, a console ban is irreversible. Don’t scare yourself into thinking that Microsoft is handing out console bans all the time, though. While there’s no hard data on the subject, Xbox once released a statement back in the Xbox 360 era, when all console suspensions were permanent, stating that console bans were issued to a small percentage of its 14 million user base at the time. The main reason these Xbox consoles got banned is that they had “been illegally modified in order to play pirated games.”

Once your console or account has been banned, no one from the customer service team can help you get it unbanned. Even if you buy the console second-hand and explain to Xbox that you’re not the one who committed the violations, the decision will not be reversed. Also, formatting the console to factory default settings will not lift the ban since the Xbox network will still recognize the console when it tries to connect to it and deny access.
