A second teaser trailer has arrived for Buddy, the upcoming horror comedy from Too Many Cooks creator Casper Kelly, and it comes as the film gears up for a presence at San Diego Comic-Con later this week. Roadside Attractions and Saban Films will release Buddy in theatres on September 4, and you can watch the second teaser in the embed above.
Kelly first earned widespread attention with Adult Swim’s viral sensation Too Many Cooks, before directing Adult Swim Yule Log, Adult Swim Yule Log 2: Branchin’ Out, the Cheddar Goblin commercial featured in Mandy, a segment of V/H/S/Halloween, and episodes of Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell. Buddy is coming to Comic-Con
Roadside Attractions has announced an extensive Comic-Con lineup for the film on Friday, July 24, including:
- Two invitation-only breakfast screenings featuring introductions from director Casper Kelly.
- A Ballroom 20 panel titled “Buddy, Everyone’s Favorite Orange Unicorn, from the Deranged Mind of Casper Kelly.”
- A press line later that afternoon featuring Kelly, star Delaney Quinn, producers Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz, lead puppeteer Devon Ludlow, and a special appearance by Buddy himself.
The Comic-Con events suggest the studio is making Buddy one of its major genre showcases ahead of the film’s theatrical release.
What is Buddy about?
Remember BUDDY—the bright orange unicorn and star of that classic children’s television show who brought joy and life lessons into your living room?
Inside the colorful world of It’s Buddy!, a group of children spend their days singing, dancing, and helping Buddy spread happiness. But when one child refuses to play along, Buddy is not pleased, and cracks begin to appear in this seemingly perfect world.
The film stars Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace, and Keegan-Michael Key.
Kelly wrote the screenplay with Jamie King, while the production comes from BoulderLight Pictures, the company behind Barbarian, Companion, Friendship, and Weapons, alongside Low Spark Films.
Early reactions
JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray previously reviewed Buddy, giving it a 6/10 score. While praising the film’s opening act as “mostly brilliant,” he felt the story lost momentum after leaving Buddy’s television world before recovering during its finale.
With Comic-Con about to introduce the film to an even larger horror audience and a fresh teaser, Buddy is being hyped as one of this year’s more unusual genre releases.
