Blumhouse and its merger partner Atomic Monster were back at New York Comic Con on the Empire Stage for BlumFest, sharing a time slot with the action/comedy Violent Night 2. Former YouTube personality Matthew “MatPat” Patrick moderated the panel, and when Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum joined him on stage, they immediately kicked it off with an announcement.
Blum excitedly revealed that Patrick entered a multi-picture deal to adapt indie horror games for the big screen. Patrick, who founded and hosted Game Theorists and a slew of spin off YouTube channels, said this was an opportunity to help these smaller gaming titles get a wider reach.
“We’re giving them the spotlight they deserve, the megaphone that they need because they’re incredible and they need more audience,” Then both men explained that the first project was in the works, rolling a quick teaser trailer of an adaptation of Amanda the Adventurer, a horror game set in a children’s show on VHS tape
And along with MatPat, another online creator Heidi Wong also signed a short film development deal with Blumhouse Atomic Monster really expanding the kind of audiences they could potentially reach.
“It’s inspired by Eastern mythology and folklore, and I grew up in Asia, so it’s very close to me,” she hinted about the first project.
But the announcements and reveals didn’t stop there. Jason Blum stood proudly before the list of the movies slated to release in 2027 under Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
“There are not a lot of companies, particularly our size, that are making nine theatrical horror films a year,” he said. “And in addition to that, obviously, we have our TV shows, our games, our live events, our merchandise. And we have some amazing, amazing projects coming next year, like Scarlett Johansson in The Exorcist: Martyrs.”
Coming March 12, 2027, the supernatural police procedural set in the franchise that began with the adaptation of the 1971 William Peter Blatty horror novel will be directed by Mike Flanagan, who joined cast member Chiwetel Ejiofor on stage.
Another adaptation that was not on the slate list perked up some ears during the panel: James Tynion IV’s hugely successful comic book Something Is Killing the Children, and something is definitely killing the children, the author assured the crowd.
“I promise you, there are kids who die in the script,” the author said. He also revealed that the production was ready to get underway as soon the snow melts in the shooting location they hope to find. The story follows Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who arrives in the town of Archer’s Peak, Wisconsin, where a young boy accidentally summoned a creature murdering the local children.
Horror icon and founder of Atomic Monster James Wan also joined the festivities, with the title screen on stage cheekily changing to “WanFest.” The creator of such franchises as Insidious and Saw unveiled a return to the Saw universe and Paranormal Activity, the film series that started it all for Blumhouse. Outside the realm of horror, he also said that a RoboCop project was in the works in collaboration with the original director, Paul Verhoeven, and actor Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Legion) to star.
For a surprise treat, LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out, Knives Out) stopped by on stage to announce Molepeople, a story of a man who descends into the New York City underground and finds a separate civilization, to be released on August 27.
Additional announcements include a new Blair Witch project for September, a new IP and the first movie on the slate for 2027, River, a sequel in The Revenge of La Llorona in February, Sleepover in October, and in November, Seasons, directed by Drew Hancock who sent a funny video greeting from the shooting location in Ireland where cast member Ron Perlman unexpectedly showed up to interrupt the director and surprise the audience.
So far, the future looks busy and only getting busier for Blumhouse Atomic Monster, and the horror genre never looked so strong.
