From a potential Batman to the very real X-Men, all eyes are on comic book adaptations in 2026! Characters are getting their second or third chances to shine on screen, and some long-beloved ones are finally getting their first. One way or another, all kinds of superhero fans are on the edges of their seats to see it. The divide between them lies in who exactly is playing these characters.
The cast of the upcoming X-Men movie was <a href="https://www.marvel.com/articles/movies/marvel-studios-x-men-cast-d23-2026-announcement” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>unveiled at D23 on Aug. 14, 2026. For a large portion of fans, including myself, this cast is pretty great. We’ve been begging for fresh, young faces in blockbusters for years now. The Marvel name carries a lot of weight by itself; why continue to rely on only high-profile celebrities?
As I see the chunk of fans online who avidly hate the new castings, I understand why studios come back to the same handful of faces. People see an actor and only see the actor. They don’t see all the work that actor will put into their character.
New Casting Controversies

Kit Connor is British; Cyclops is not. Inde Navarette doesn’t have a Southern accent; Rogue does. Fans can’t look past these characteristics, despite Marvel having cast British Benedict Cumberbatch as Pennsylvanian Dr. Strange previously. They’ve been putting Sebastian Stan in wigs since 2011. Fans claim to want fresh faces but won’t put their faith in them to actually play the role.
Another new casting that has fans divided is Asa Germann as Angel, another important member of the X-Men. I was hesitant about this casting at first, until I saw someone compare his face to that of a Renaissance cherub. Playing a character named Angel, I now think this casting is near perfect. A face uniquely suited for a role like this? Sign me up.
The most well-received casting that’s come out has been David Jonsson as T’Challa’s son and the new Black Panther.
On the other side of the fence, DC is facing similar backlash to castings as Marvel. A lot of the debate isn’t even over the currently cast characters; the fans are arguing over all the characters that haven’t been cast yet.

When Lanterns was announced and began airing, a lot of die-hard fans were extremely hesitant about both Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. I must admit, I was part of this majority. A southern Hal Jordan was not something I was interested in. Most Green Lantern fans agreed about this.
However, as the show played out, we were all proven wrong. Not only are the castings great, but the show itself is so good it’s outperforming DC’s other TV projects. Experienced actors were cast but still heavily doubted. Fans are reluctant to place their trust in studios’ hands to treat their favorite characters correctly.
An actor can be perfect for a role and still be written horribly by the studio itself. This is where I think the lack of trust from fans originates. People loved the idea of Ben Affleck as Batman, but he never got a chance to truly shine under the direction of Zack Snyder. Now that the DCU is fleshing itself out, comic fans are worried about how their untouched favorites will look on-screen.
Nightwing is one character in particular that has DC fans divided across all platforms. It’s a long-running joke that there isn’t anyone attractive enough to play him. The conversation became super active when Hudson Williams posted about wanting to play the Blüdhaven crimefighter.
Now, fans are in a race to find the perfect face for the role. They’re so focused on the face that they aren’t considering the ethnicity, age, or actual ability of their chosen actor. Nightwing is a 30-year-old Romani man, but some fan castings don’t reflect that. Many fans have voiced that they want someone unknown instead of an already established actor.
Both Marvel and DC are entering new eras of moviemaking, and fan opinion on casting is at an all-time high. Superhero media has returnedfrom its lull in popularity, and the audience wants a say in what goes on their screen. They don’t want to see the same actors recycled or miscast to turn a profit. Studios now must find the middle ground between honoring fans’ wishes and doing what’s best for their projects.
