Audeze is building the future of PlayStation audio

Audeze is taking the full reins on PlayStation’s future audio gear.

    • Audeze says it is “more deeply involved” in the creation of PlayStation audio products.
    • The company reveals that it is developing all future audio products for the gaming platform.
    • There are a number of unreleased devices that are currently in “various stages of development.”

Back in 2023, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) — the company’s gaming arm — announced the acquisition of Audeze, the makers of the Maxwell 2. Despite being brought into the PlayStation fold, Audeze has continued to operate independently and release multi-platform products. While the audio company has been focusing on PlayStation audio innovation, the partnership between the two entities is getting even tighter.

In an interview with TechRadar, Audeze Marketing Director Peter James said that the company’s “primary function within PlayStation is to develop the next generation of PlayStation audio.” To that, James adds that the company is getting “more deeply involved” with the PlayStation brand than ever before. He describes Audeze as the “audio Skunk Works for PlayStation.”

The executive goes on to state that, “acoustically speaking, we are developing the sound of all future PlayStation audio products.” He also reveals that there are a number of unreleased audio products that are in “various stages of development.” While James stops short of going into the details of those new products, he does speak about bringing planar magnetic driver technology to a wider audience.

“[We’re] bringing people to better sound, who in many cases wouldn’t know what planar magnetic technology is, [and] wouldn’t know why it sounds better,” James remarks. “They’re going to buy [an official headset] because it’s a PlayStation headset, but now they’re getting an elevated audio experience, and potentially, once they become aware of it, chasing down even more elevated experiences. The more people get those [drivers], the more that raises their expectation of the next headphone they buy.”

The executive concludes the interview by discussing how planar magnetic technology is becoming more accessible:

Previously, the most accessible planar gaming headset was $299, and then we went with Sony and made it [the Pulse Elite headset] $149, so it’s slowly pushing its way down to be much more accessible.

Audeze appears to be optimistic about the future of PlayStation audio. And it looks like we can expect more premium audio products that use Audeze’s technology to come our way soon.
