Arjun Rampal’s Billionaire to start shooting in November; fictional tycoon based on Vijay Mallya: Report

    29 August,2026 06:45 PM IST |  Mumbai  |  mid-day online correspondent

Arjun Rampal is set to step into the shoes of a powerful businessman in Billionaire, which is slated to go on floors in November. Loosely inspired by Vijay Mallya, the fictional drama will explore ambition, wealth, power and the personal costs of building a massive business empire

Arjun Rampal is set to enter the world of high-stakes business with Billionaire, an upcoming Amazon MX Player series that, according to an exclusive report by Variety India, will begin filming in November. The actor will play a wealthy businessman whose journey from ambition to immense power forms the crux of the story.

    Arjun Rampal as businessman

The series, announced earlier this year, is expected to delve into the choices and sacrifices that come with building a business empire. While money and influence will drive the narrative, the story also looks at the impact that an obsession with success can have on a person’s life and those around him.

While Billionairetakes inspiration from the life of Vijay Mallya, the makers have clarified that the show is not intended to be a direct account of his life. Producer Prabhleen Sandhu had earlier described the project as “loosely based” on Mallya, while making it clear that the protagonist is not a direct portrayal of the businessman.

The central character is instead a fictional tycoon who builds an enormous business empire by taking unconventional risks and refusing to play by established rules. As his stature grows, his ambition begins to come at a cost, bringing his professional and personal worlds into conflict.

Rampal has already begun preparing for the demanding part. Speaking when the series was announced, the actor expressed his excitement about getting the chance to take on such a character.

“Playing a role like this is definitely not something that comes your way every day, and when it does, you grab it with both hands, feet, and whatever you’ve got,” he said. Arjun Rampal also recently got married to his longtime girlfriend Gabriella Demetriades.

    Billionaire series

The makers have yet to reveal the rest of the cast or announce a premiere date. For now, the November filming schedule marks the next major step for the project, with further details expected to emerge as production progresses.

For Rampal, Billionairefollows his recent appearance inDhurandharand gives him another opportunity to play a larger-than-life figure. While his previous role placed him in a very different world, the upcoming series will see him navigate the pressures of wealth, influence and business.

With cameras expected to roll in November, Billionaireis already shaping up as an intriguing addition to Rampal’s OTT slate. Whether the fictional tycoon will remind viewers of the real-life businessman who inspired the premise remains to be seen.
