As Marvel Studios revs up the Avengers: Doomsday marketing machine, they’re also setting the stage for what comes next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This summer, Kevin Feige and Co. have spent a lot of time detailing the post-Multiverse Saga future, confirming a full slate of three films for 2028. That year will see the releases of the highly anticipated X-Men reboot, Ghost Rider starring Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 3. It’ll be a couple of years before these characters take center stage in solo projects, but rumors suggest some of them could pop up in Avengers: Secret Wars first. Now, another MCU newcomer could be in the cards.

On the latest episode of the podcast The Hot Mic, industry insider Jeff Sneider shared that he’s been told “that Inde [Navarrette] is going to be in Secret Wars,” meaning the Obsession star could make her MCU debut as Rogue in next winter’s major crossover event. Unsurprisingly, Marvel fans have been buzzing about this on social media, hoping it means a particular storyline from the comics is about to come to the big screen.
Will Rogue Take Captain Marvel’s Powers In Secret Wars?

Many of the fan reactions to Sneider’s report mention Carol Danvers. For the uninitiated, Rogue and Carol Danvers have a bit of a history in the comics. Most notably, the former permanently absorbed the latter’s powers, abilities, and even psyche at one point, turning Rogue into an extremely powerful mutant. This development was adapted on X-Men: The Animated Series in the episode “A Rogue’s Tale,” which detailed Rogue’s backstory. Having Carol Danvers’ fractured mind trapped inside her body took an immense toll on Rogue, and she eventually turned to Charles Xavier and the X-Men for help.
Since so little is known about Secret Wars and the X-Men reboot at this point in time, it’s unknown if the MCU will follow this trajectory for Rogue’s origin. The notion of Navarrette appearing in Secret Wars isn’t far-fetched, however; it’s been reported that Sadie Sink is reprising Jean Grey in Secret Wars, so there will likely be some X-Men representation in that Avengers film. And since X-Men is the first MCU film arriving after Secret Wars (only a handful of months later), it wouldn’t be surprising if there was some setup for the mutant team’s first adventure. Secret Wars could lay the groundwork for X-Men as it gives the MCU a soft reset. This is why rumors of Gosling’s Ghost Rider and David Jonsson’s Black Panther appearing in Secret Wars are feasible as well.
It remains to be seen what Carol Danvers’ future in the MCU will be. Captain Marvel hasn’t been seen since 2023’s The Marvels, which is the MCU’s lowest-grossing film. On one hand, it wouldn’t make sense to relegate a powerful hero like Captain Marvel to the sidelines for the battle against Doctor Doom. However, Marvel could opt to distance itself from The Marvels after the film’s underwhelming performance. Tellingly, The Marvels was left off Marvel’s list of projects to watch before Avengers: Doomsday, even though Monica Rambeau ends that film trapped in the X-Men’s reality. If Carol doesn’t have a role to play in the forthcoming Avengers movies, then the Rogue/Captain Marvel showdown fans are dreaming about won’t happen.
For those holding out hope that Rogue and Carol will cross paths on screen, it’s still plausible. We don’t know the Secret Wars cast at this point, and it’s unlikely that information will be officially revealed any time soon (even as Secret Wars gears up to start production). In the interest of preserving Doomsday spoilers, Marvel may opt to keep the Secret Wars ensemble under wraps for the time being, waiting until after Doomsday has had its time in the spotlight before spilling the details. It’ll be interesting to see if Brie Larson is among the Secret Wars cast, but even if she isn’t part of any announcement, it’s hard to see Marvel going through two Avengers movies without one of the most powerful beings in the MCU.
