    Anime NYC Opens in New York

    Anime NYC, the largest event on the U.S. East Coast showcasing Japanese anime and related culture, opened in New York on August 20, drawing large crowds of fans and cosplayers, with about 150,000 visitors expected over its four-day run

    The venue was filled with anime merchandise, while concerts by Japanese artists were also held as part of the event.

    Many attendees appeared dressed as characters from popular Japanese series including One Piece and Dragon Ball, adding to the lively atmosphere inside the convention.

    One participant said Japanese anime had played a major role in their life. “I’ve watched anime and collected figures since I was little. Japan has had a huge influence on my life.”

    Anime NYC runs through August 23, with organizers expecting around 150,000 people to attend during the four days.

    Typhoon Nos. 20 and 18 Approach Okinawa in Succession

    Two typhoons are approaching Okinawa in succession, with Typhoon No. 20 (Kenari) already affecting the Sakishima Islands with heavy rain and strong winds while the much stronger Typhoon No. 18 (Soudelor) is forecast to intensify further before passing near the Daito Islands and Okinawa’s main island later this week. As of 5 a.m. on August 23, Typhoon No. 20 was north of Yonaguni Island and moving south-southwest. The storm is expected to maintain typhoon strength through August 24.

    Strong Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Shakes Tokyo

    A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck the greater Tokyo region shortly after 2 a.m. on August 23, registering a maximum intensity of lower 5 on Japan’s seven-level seismic scale in Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba and Tokyo, with no threat of a tsunami.
