American Idolalum Caleb Flynn has learned his fate, days after a jury convicted him of murdering his wife Ashley as she slept.
An Ohio judge sentenced the 40-year-old father to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday, explaining his actions exhibited “layers of deceit, manipulation, and cruelty.” Flynn, who maintains his innocence, must also pay $20,000 in restitution to Ashley’s parents for expenses related to her funeral.
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to Flynn’s attorney for comment.
Ashley, a mother of two, was fatally shot inside the Flynn family’s Tipp City, Ohio, home on Feb. 16. At the time, Flynn told police it had been an intruder, but four days later he was arrested on accusations that he had pulled the trigger and staged the murder scene.

During his trial, prosecutors claimed Flynn “wanted a future” with his mistress and revealed several shocking text messages he sent to her.
“If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat,” he allegedly wrote days before Ashley’s death. The night before her body was found, Flynn texted his mistress to say, “I choose you. I’m free.”
Caleb and Ashley shared two daughters, and the eldest wrote her father a scathing letter that was read aloud in court by a family member ahead of his sentencing on Monday.
“Ashley Flynn was the best thing that ever happened to you,” wrote 12-year-old Alyssa. “You had the best life ever and you decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age.”
In his own statement, Flynn sobbed as he addressed his daughters, whom he called “my greatest joy in this life.”
“Please know your daddy is so proud of you and loves you beyond what words can describe,” he said. “I have so many thoughts and dreams of raising you and seeing you grow up to be mighty women of God, but unfortunately I can’t. And so I am sorry.”

Flynn, who competed on season 12 of American Idol, acknowledged the text messages to his mistress, telling the court he’s most remorseful for “the awful things I said about Ashley.”
But despite what he wrote in those communications, he insisted, “I did not kill my wife. I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to.”
Flynn’s lawyers have vowed to appeal his conviction.
Outside the courthouse on Sept. 29, defense attorney Patrick Mulligan told reporters, “There’s a lack of evidence on prior calculation and design,”
