AMD FSR 4.1 expands support for older GPUs and Ryzen-powered handhelds

AMD is expanding FSR Upscaling 4.1 to older graphics hardware sooner than expected. Released on October 20, the Adrenalin 26.10.1 driver introduces official support for Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards and selected Ryzen APUs, bringing the company’s machine learning upscaler to RDNA 2 hardware months ahead of its original early 2027 target.

The move follows a similar expansion for Radeon RX 7000 GPUs in June. Those cards gained FSR 4.1 support through Adrenalin 26.6.2, which also arrived earlier than AMD’s previously planned July window. The latest update covers several integrated graphics platforms, including Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series processors, as well as Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 series chips. Notably, AMD’s release notes do not explicitly list Ryzen AI 7 or AI 5 models, leaving their eligibility uncertain.

Handheld gaming PCs are also part of the rollout. AMD lists systems powered by the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 A, although users will need compatible drivers from their device manufacturers to access the feature.

Steam Deck support, meanwhile, remains unconfirmed. AMD has yet to include Valve’s handheld on its official compatibility list or provide a release timeline. The Ryzen Z2 A’s inclusion may offer a glimmer of hope given its RDNA 2 graphics architecture, but it is not enough to establish support for the Steam Deck. Still, if official support never arrives, someone will probably try to get it running through a community-made solution.

AMD has also listed FSR 4.1 support for Xbox Series X and Series S as “coming soon,” without providing a firm launch date. Earlier FSR versions are already accessible to Xbox developers through Microsoft’s Game Development Kit.

According to AMD, FSR 4.1 improves fine detail, temporal stability and ghosting compared with earlier implementations. These changes could be especially valuable on handhelds and integrated GPUs, where lowering internal rendering resolution is often necessary to maintain smooth performance.

However, this update specifically covers FSR Upscaling 4.1. Other machine learning features, such as frame generation and ray regeneration, have separate hardware requirements and should not be assumed to work on every newly supported device. AMD’s broader FSR ecosystem spans hundreds of games through native integrations and driver-level overrides, including Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6, and Crimson Desert.

As always, for the latest news on AMD Radeon graphics cards, FSR upscaling technology, gaming handheld compatibility, and developments across the gaming industry, be sure to follow our dedicated hardware coverage.
