For six years, the entertainment industry has been locked in a debate that touched everything from studio strategy to real estate valuations to the future of a 106-year-old American institution. The question was simple and existential: did streaming permanently replace movie theaters?
July 20, AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron appeared on CNBC’s <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2026/07/20/amc-entertainment-ceo-adam-aron-on-record-q2-results-people-love-to-go-to-movie-theaters.html” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Squawk Box and answered it without hesitation.

That is Aron declaring that the years-long narrative about streaming killing theaters, accelerated by COVID and amplified by every analyst who predicted the permanent behavioral shift away from cinemas, has been settled. And he has the numbers to back it up.

The Q2 2026 results were not just good by AMC’s recent standards. They were records by any historical measure, according to the company’s earnings release.

Total revenues reached $1.597 billion, up 14.2% year over year

Adjusted EBITDA surged 69.6% to $321.4 million, the first time in AMC’s history the company crossed the $300 million mark in a single quarter.Â

Free cash flow was $190.1 million.Â

Cash on hand grew to $778.4 million, up 83.7% from a year ago.Â

Attendance rose 13.5% to 71.3 million guests.
“In our 106-year history, never before has AMC had such superb results,” Aron said in the earnings release.Â
The Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded from 13.6% a year ago to 20.1%, demonstrating the operating leverage that Aron has pointed to as the core investment case for AMC at rising revenue levels.
The first-half story reinforces the trajectory. Combined H1 2026 revenues of $2.642 billion were up 16.9% year over year. First-half Adjusted EBITDA of $359.7 million was more than two and a half times (up 172.9%) the $131.8 million in the same period of 2025.

The argument that theaters are dying always carried an implicit assumption: that studios would migrate their best content to streaming first, leaving cinemas with the scraps. Looks like that assumption is not holding.
