Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch is being sued by its own creators.

The class-action lawsuit alleges the tech giant used creators’ content to train Amazon’s AI products without their consent or proper compensation.

The lawsuit, led by Warren Pandiscia on behalf of himself and millions of streamers, was filed on August 20 in San Francisco.

The suit comes days after Twitch made headlines for appearing to confirm its ongoing mining practices after notifying users how they could “opt-out” of the program within system settings

According to the filing, Twitch’s default setting allows live and recorded streaming content and chat history, among other items, to be scraped for training purposes.

The plaintiffs claim that such practices may have been going on as early as March 2024, as part of a change to Twitch’s terms and conditions which alluded “that users grant Twitch and its sublicensees the right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, distribute, and create derivative works from their content,” without explicitly stating its AI-related purposes.

Many of the allegations appear to point to the platform’s handling of disclosing this information, as well as comments made by Mike Minton, Twitch’s chief product officer, during a Live Q&A session.
