Amanda Seyfried‘s view on filming sex scenes has changed over the years, revealing she turned down an upcoming TV project for that very reason.
The actress of Mamma Mia! and Mean Girls fame made remarks during a two-person panel moderated by Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival in East Hampton, N.Y., on Oct. 4.
“I passed on a show where I would have to have sex all the time because of the sex,” she told Baldwin . “Doesn’t matter [who it’s with]…I don’t wanna do it. I’m uncomfortable with it. I’m not into it right now.”
She clarified if the opportunity came back around at a later point, “maybe I’d be in a different space. But I don’t wanna deal with being naked with a stranger.” Seyfried, Oscar nominated for the film Mank, added, “I have kids now who are paying attention to what I do. And so I have to be less of a pushover.”

Seyfried has two children — daughter Nina, 9, and son, Thomas, 6 — with estranged husband Thomas Sadoski (The Newsroom). She and Sadoski announced their splitafter nine years in September.
Seyfried attended the festival in support of her work in The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd, helmed by actor-turned-director Tim Blake Nelson. She stars as a teacher in an abusive relationship who falls for an inmate (Scoot McNairy) at a maximum-security prison where takes a job.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before coming stateside for the Hamptons event.
The star’s outlook on sex scenes for film and TV wasn’t always this way. “Our jobs are weird. And as I get older, it gets weirder,” she acknowledged. “We have to be romantic with people that we’re not romantic with. Sometimes it’s great. Sometimes it’s really uncomfortable. But I can’t believe back in the day I was just like, ‘We gotta make out. Great! This is awesome. I know how to make out.'”

Seyfried, who was part of HBO’s polygamist series Big Loveat the beginning of her career, recalled how sex scenes “used to be so fun” and once felt like “a non-thing.”
“It was like, ‘I get to make out with a hot person today…And they’re paying me,'” she said.
Seyfried was last seen on screen in last year’s The Housemaid, an adaptation of author Freida McFadden’s best-selling book of the same name. A sequel is underway, though it’s unlikely she’ll return to the role of Nina Winchester, a woman who initially comes across as gaslighting her new nanny, Sydney Sweeney’s Millie Calloway.
Seyfried also starred in 2025’s The Testament of Ann Lee, about the founding leader of the Shaker Movement.
