All ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Shows In Order

Pretty Little Liars (2010) may not be the most faithful adaptation of Sara Shepard’s books, but it is one of the most successful franchises to come from a teen drama. The mere fact that there are still rumors—more than 15 years after its debut—that the show will come back in some way, shape, or form is proof that this fictional world has left a mark on audiences. Similarly, the current TikTok trend of people, even some of the cast members, pretending to get texts from the anonymous and infamous “A” exemplifies the show’s enduring prevalence in popular culture. 

The show has become synonymous with the autumnal season and is known for its outlandish timeline. Can we talk about everything Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) accomplished on the night that she disappeared? It also spawned three spinoff series and one, possibly lesser-known, web series, Pretty Dirty Secrets (2012). Each of which expands the show’s universe across TV networks (The original show premiered on ABC Family and wrapped up its impressive run on Freeform) and streaming shows, highlighting the franchise’s endurance. Here’s how to watch the Pretty Little Liars TV shows in order on HBO Max, Hulu, and more.

There was a time when Glee (2009), The Vampire Diaries (2009), Gossip Girl (2007), and Pretty Little Liars were airing at the same time. It was the peak of early 2000s YA TV! It also feels incredibly nostalgic now because the show got a seven-season run where every season but its final one had at least 20 episodes—something that is practically unheard of now. Pretty Little Liars also did one of my favorite things about a coming-of-age show: it made the fictional town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania a character. So much so, some spinoffs mention and revisit it. 

The drama on Pretty Little Liars always had the highest stakes for its titular characters—Aria (Lucy Hale), Hannah (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), and Spencer (Troian Bellisario). The things they experience over the 160 episodes can’t be accurately summarized or replicated. Some of it (more than I realized upon my most recent rewatch) doesn’t age well. Aria and Ezra (Ian Harding) being endgame is still one of the biggest mistakes the show made. Even so, Pretty Little Liarsremains one of the most entertaining and memorable teen dramas on TV.

The first Pretty Little Liars spinoff series came during the original show’s run. Ravenswood started through something that also rarely happens at the same frequency on TV: a backdoor pilot in Pretty Little Liars’ fourth season. It took Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) away from Rosewood to the titular neighboring town. It takes a similar energy to the original show in that there is a mystery specific to Caleb and five other Ravenswood residents. The massive difference is that Ravenswood takes a massive swing and introduces a supernatural element to the franchise. 

In Ravenswood, Caleb experiences some truly wild and life-altering things. Thankfully, it affects him when he returns to Pretty Little Liars in Season 5. It would be so odd if the original show brushed aside his time in Ravenswood. Moreover, Pretty Little Liars has to resolve the spinoff’s cliffhanger because it’s canceled after one season. Of all the spinoff series, Ravenswood tries to do something original to entertaining results. It just doesn’t always work the best because Ravenswood only has 10 episodes and one season to tell its quite sprawling story. The show also works as a great watch alongside ABC Family’s other underrated mysterious or supernatural one-season shows, Twisted (2013) and The Nine Lives of Chloe King (2011).

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is a fascinating addition. It follows the events of Pretty Little Liars and takes place in the town of Beacon Heights in Oregon. The Perfectionists features a new cast and two returning characters: Alison and Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish). Parrish’s performance in this show is so excellent; it’s like the shared universe doesn’t miss a beat with Mona. The Perfectionists clearly wants to have a foot in both worlds, like Gossip Girl(2021), while also moving far away from Rosewood (or Ravenswood). That’s where it runs into some of its issues.

The show’s mystery revolves around the murder of a student at Beacon Heights University. It often feels like The Perfectionists wants to live up to Pretty Little Liars but often falls short. It doesn’t help that the sequel series breaks up a fan-favorite couple and offers only off-screen updates about two others. Again, it also isn’t ideal that the show only has 10 episodes to make an impression, introduce a new generation of Liars, and satisfy returning fans, which could be one of the many reasons why The Perfectionsists doesn’t make it past one season. However, the dwindling episode orders are a sign of TV’s changes since Pretty Little Liars’ debut.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is the strongest spinoff series in the franchise. It works best because it exists within the shared universe but stands entirely on its own. It’s also the first in the franchise to be a streaming series, showcasing TV’s changes over the last decade. 

It introduces Imogen (Bailee Madison), Noa (Maia Reficco), Tabby (Chandler Kinney), Mouse (Malia Pyles), and Faran (Zara) as the next generation of Liars, and they don’t feel like 1-to-1 comparisons to the original characters. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin exists within the world while offering something fresh and developed from where the franchise began more than a decade prior. Sadly, after a 10-episode first season, the show returned for a second season—Pretty Little Liars: Summer School—with fewer episodes. 

Even with a truncated season, it delivers something new and interesting, taking on different horror influences than the first season. It’s not ideal that Pretty Little Liars: Summer School confirms that Aria and Ezra are still together. Otherwise, this spinoff series only gains confidence with its sophomore season. It’s a massive disappointment that it didn’t get another season. It’s one of the recent TV cancellations that still burns two years later. Needless to say, I will follow the Pretty Little Liars franchise wherever it goes, and I wonder where it will go next.
