Alien: Isolation 2 team explains how its outdoor setting stays true to the 1970s-inspired design

Alien: Isolation 2 expands outdoors while preserving the 1970s-inspired technology and retro-futuristic style of the Alien universe.

Alien: Isolation 2 will expand beyond the confined environments of its predecessor by introducing an outdoor mining colony, but Creative Assembly is taking care to preserve the retro-futuristic style that defined the original Alien film.

The sequel remains heavily influenced by Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, which established the visual language of the Alien universe through industrial interiors, analogue technology and machinery that appeared practical rather than futuristic. While the new game gives players more freedom to explore outdoor areas, the development team says those environments must still feel as though they belong to the same world.

Creative Assembly is expanding the world beyond the original game

The first Alien: Isolation placed players inside the Sevastopol space station, creating a deliberately enclosed, claustrophobic setting as Amanda Ripley tried to survive encounters with a Xenomorph. The sequel takes a broader approach, introducing an outdoor colony world alongside the familiar confines of a Weyland-Yutani outpost.

The change gives Creative Assembly more opportunities to explore different environments while retaining the visual identity established by the original game and film. However, expanding outdoors also creates design challenges that didn’t exist when almost every piece of technology was protected inside a space station.

Speaking to TechRadar Gaming at Gamescom, principal environment artist Archie Whitehead avoided revealing too much about the new setting, hinting that players will encounter surprises while exploring the outdoor mining colony. Principal UI artist Laura Mouther said the team still relies heavily on the first Alien film and the original Alien: Isolation for its design approach.

“The first movie is the lens we’re looking through everything at,” Mouther said. “It’s our guiding step. And when it comes to new, we’re really excited about introducing new retrofitting tech.”

That approach means the developers are not simply creating futuristic equipment and placing it outdoors. Instead, they are considering how technology inspired by the original film would realistically have been adapted for a harsher environment.

Familiar technology needs to work outdoors

Mouther explained the challenge using a CRT monitor as an example. While such equipment fits naturally within the interiors seen throughout the Alien universe, putting the same technology outside raises practical questions about how it would survive exposure to weather.

“I can maybe give you an idea of our approach to it,” she said. “We think about it now that you have to be indoors and outdoors; obviously, things need to adapt. I have a CRT monitor on my workstation as my third monitor; there are holes on the top in the back. Obviously, if I put that outside and it’s raining, it’s gonna go kaput, right? So we need to adapt what we saw in the first movie and the first game so it feels believable in this outdoor environment. [So] it makes sense.”

The result is intended to make familiar technology feel appropriate for its new surroundings without abandoning the aesthetic that fans associate with Alien. Rather than redesigning the technology as modern equipment, Creative Assembly is considering how existing designs might have been modified using the manufacturing methods and materials available within the game’s period-inspired setting.

Whitehead said those decisions also have to be made “through the lens of someone from the 1970s”. That is particularly important when designing screens and other equipment, as modern technologies such as LEDs and LCD panels did not exist in the period that inspired the visual style.

The approach extends to small details throughout the environment. Whitehead said environment artists constantly make decisions about shapes, vents and other components when creating assets. While the team could rely on generic futuristic designs, it instead studies reference material to keep its creations consistent with the

Movie references help shape the new designs

Whitehead said the development team has examined photographs and imagery from the original Alien film to understand how its distinctive objects and environments were constructed. The aim is not simply to reproduce the same props, but to understand the methods used to create them and apply those ideas to new designs.

“As an environment artist, I’m making design decisions all the time when modelling something about the shapes used; where’s a vent, where’s this?” Whitehead said. He explained that the team uses movie set photographs and other imagery to “dissect” how the assets seen in the game should be constructed.

Some of the original film’s visual style came from repurposing ordinary objects and industrial materials. Whitehead compared some of the shapes to “yoghurt pots” and described the use of vacuum-formed shapes. He also noted that some components came from unexpectedomber from the Second World War

That philosophy carries into Alien: Isolation 2. Rather than designing technology that looks futuristic by modern standards, Creative Assembly is trying to imagine what people in the game’s world could realistically have built with the materials and manufacturing techniques available to them.

“Sometimes it feels like yoghurt pots,” he joked. “It’s a lot of vacuum form shapes. They even had some parts of it; I think it was a bomber from the Second World War. They got some stuff from the scrapyard.

“So looking at what they had and working out how to recontextualise those things when creating a new design, and just making sure that whenever we reference stuff, we don’t reference anything from beyond that point because those manufacturing techniques and those materials didn’t exist yet, so they shouldn’t be here.”

Alien: Isolation 2 is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Creative Assembly has not yet announced a release date.
