Alfonso Gomez-Rejon will direct the first two episodes of Disney+’s Afterlife with Archie, a zombie horror series based on the bestselling comic books.
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon has been tapped to direct the pilot and second episode of Afterlife with Archie, an upcoming Disney+ series based on the comic book series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla.
According to Deadline, Gomez-Rejon will also serve as an executive producer on the episodes. The series received a green light from Disney+ in July 2026 and is scheduled to premiere around Halloween 2027.
Afterlife with Archie reimagines the familiar town of Riverdale as the setting for a zombie apocalypse. The story follows Archie and his friends as they struggle to survive after a supernatural spell cast by a certain teenage witch goes wrong, unleashing an army of the possessed dead.
As the characters fight to stay alive, their friendships, romantic relationships and loyalties face new challenges amid the growing crisis. The series combines horror and supernatural elements with the familiar teenage drama associated with the Archie Comics universe.
The show is executive produced by Aguirre-Sacasa and Jimmy Gibbons through Muckle Man Productions, alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman through Berlanti Productions. Jon Goldwater will also executive produce for Archie Comics Studios.
Gomez-Rejon is known for directing the film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and episodes of the Prime Video series Hunters. His other credits include The Current War and American Horror Story: Coven, for which he received an Emmy nomination for outstanding directing for a miniseries or movie.
The director also has several upcoming projects, including the Apple TV series Stowaway, starring Oscar Isaac, the film The Fortress of Solitude and an Amazon television adaptation of Edna Ferber’s novel Giant.
Further details about the Afterlife with Archie cast and production schedule have yet to be announced.
